Baylor Baseball Mauled by Sam Houston in Midweek Matchup, 18-3

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Baylor baseball (7-13) has now dropped to 0-7 on the road with an 18-3 blowout loss to Sam Houston (14-7) Tuesday evening at Don Sanders Stadium.

Coming off a ranked series win over No. 24 Texas Tech last weekend, the loss to the Bearkats was a step in the opposite direction. It was the second time this season that the Bears lost by 10 or more runs. In the defeat, Baylor was outhit, 17-to-6.

Baylor’s lineup totaled six hits in the blowout loss.

Sam Houston jumped out to an early lead with a three-spot off Tuesday starter and right-handed pitcher Tanner Duke (RFr.). Future draft prospect and potential All-American catcher Walker Jankek (Jr.) had a great performance, going 3-for-5 at the plate, including a two-run homer off Duke in the first inning.

The game quickly got out of reach when a horrid third inning looked like a flashback from the many blowouts suffered last season. The Bears used four pitchers in the frame – Jackson Elizondo (Fr.), Cole Stasio (Sr.), Jackson Wilkerson (Fr.) and Drew Leach (RJr.) – to get three outs but not before the Bearkats were able to hang a 12-spot in the inning.

“When Elizondo went in, we made a move and brought Stasio in and he didn’t have [his stuff] – Wilkerson struggled too,” head coach Mitch Thompson said postgame. “It was an inning that definitely got away from us and from then on, we were just trying to battle.”

Seventeen batters came to the plate for Sam Houston in the third, and all nine Bearkats in the starting lineup scored a run. Unfortunately, Elizondo had to leave the contest after suffering what appeared to be a left arm injury.

In the sixth, Baylor scratched two runs across when left fielder Daniel Altman (Sr.) drew a bases-juiced walk and shortstop Tyriq Kemp (Jr.) lined an RBI sacrifice fly to center field.

After a rough start to the season, right-handed pitchers Grant Golomb (Sr.) and Will Glatch (Jr.) had nice outings out of the bullpen. In 2.2 spotless innings of work, Golomb struck out one and didn’t allow a single baserunner. Glatch added a scoreless frame of his own.

“I thought Grant Golomb was good [tonight], and it was good to see Will Glatch have a good inning,” Thompson said. “And there were a few swings that were pretty good tonight, but it was a tough night – it wasn’t how we envisioned it.”
