Baylor Baseball Extends Winning Streak to Four Games, Beats UTA in Midweek Matchup, 3-1
ARLINGTON, Texas – Baylor baseball (17-18) extended its winning streak to four games with a 3-1 defeat of UT Arlington (15-22) Tuesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
In the victory, six different BU pitchers combined for eight strikeouts and surrendered just one run and seven hits while not issuing a single walk for the first time this season.
Shortstop Tyriq Kemp (Jr.) continued his hot streak at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double in the midweek victory. Two of Baylor’s three runs came across after a pair of Maverick miscues.
To open the game on the mound, veteran righty Jared Matheson (Sr.) fanned three and tossed 2.2 scoreless frames. After missing a month with an injury, Tuesday’s outing was his second appearance since March 9 against Houston.
In the second inning, catcher Brayden Buchanan (Fr.) drew a two-out walk, and Kemp followed with a single up the middle.
In the next at-bat, left fielder Caleb Bergman (So.) hit a routine ground ball that former Bear and current UTA shortstop Jordan Medellin (RFr.) couldn’t handle cleanly to allow Buchanan to score from second base.
Across the middle innings, RJ Ruais (Fr.) and Tanner Duke (RFr.) combined for 2.1 shutout innings. Lefty Ethan Calder (So.) continued his dominant season with four strikeouts in 1.2 frames.
In the fourth, Kemp lined a two-out double into the right-center field gap. Similar to earlier in the contest, Bergman followed Kemp with a routine grounder that the UTA first baseman, Tyce Armstrong (RSo.), couldn’t handle – allowing Kemp to score and extend Baylor’s lead to 2-0.
The Bears iced the victory when first baseman Cole Posey (Sr.) pushed an RBI single through the left side to score third baseman Hunter Teplanszky (Jr.). Since being inserted back into the starting lineup on April 5, Posey has collected 10 RBIs in his last five games.
The Mavericks plated their first run of the night in the eighth off of veteran righty Gabe Craig (RJr.). Southpaw Kobe Andrade (Sr.) earned his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
Final: Baylor 3, UT Arlington 1
W: Ethan Calder (4-1) L: Aaron Calhoun (0-3) S: Kobe Andrade (2)
POTG: Tyriq Kemp (3-for-4, R, 2B)
