Does Baylor Football Have Good Enough Talent Entering 2024?

June 3, 2024

Baylor Football fans can be divided into two major camps. Fans who believed the primary fault of the 2023 team was its lack of talent and those who primarily place the blame on poor coaching. This is an oversimplification, but this general course of argument was prevalent throughout the season.

When you’re as bad as Baylor was in 2023, it’s more of a “which is worse?” situation. If Baylor had either good talent or coaching, they would not have been so bad.

Lack of talent is a coaching problem. Scheme/planning, motivition/discipline, talent acquisition and talent development are functions of the coaching staff. Failure starts at the top. Last year they showed themselves to be poor in all four phases.

Good coaching can overcome talent deficits occasionally. This was not the case last season.

Not over the course of a season. Good coaching can fill in some holes and eliminate terrible gaps. But you will have a ceiling unless you upgrade your talent, especially at the skills positions.

Correct. I appreciate what Grant Teaff was able to accomplish with what he had available to him, but he was slightly better than a .500 coach. However, this is what the BOR and administration are aiming for again. A squeaky clean HC that wins about as much as he loses. It is where we are...again.

Just look at our draft prospects and first team conference selections the last two years. It is Aranda's job to bring in talent and develop it. He is failing.

I think we have brought in good new players. It's up to the coaching staff at this point IMO.

Aranda can elevate average players into exceptional players.

No. He can't or he'd done it by now. He's a coordinator and nothing more. Period

When you're beat by alignment before the ball snaps talent doesn't matter.

Unless we hand the keys to Gary Patterson or hire a different good coach, we're now a basketball school.

Sure as hell not a Baseball school. For damn sure.

Last game of the season against Kansas. Man. We've bullied them for over a decade and it turns my stomach to think we will be 1-10 going into that game.

We've all overcome the PTSD caused by the Steele years but we're staring at a season with 30 point halftime deficits again.

If he's a good coordinator (and that seems to be a consensus), he should at least be able to elevate defensive players.

You'd think so. But I now have doubts over his earning a Natty Ring at LSU for the fact he can't do it here.

Are you guys high?

Our defensive stance, alignment, ability to read keys, responsibilities and technique were the worst I've seen from BU in forever last season.

Not to mention our talent level was subpar.

But hey, at least Ron Roberts wasn't there with his profanity.

I think the biggest weakness Aranda has shown is his choices at coordinator. The first two OCs have been a disaster and only Roberts seems to have worked on defense. If he's more involved in the defense this year and they still stink, then you're right. If they get a lot better, then the problem is more about needing to learn how to evaluate coaches.

I believe my sarcasm stuck the landing like Simone Biles.

With another coach, maybe.

If what you say is in fact true and he's competent enough to coordinate a defense without LSU level talent, how do you explain the fact we regressed as the year went on?

He either didn't insert himself and take the reins, or he did and we did not improve.
