Matt Rhule discusses injuries, mentality of team, Oklahoma and more

  • Patiently dealing with growing pains. Trying to be honest and direct with the team and it's key that coaches don't change. See problems but also a lot of growth.
  • Every week we look at what we're doing and if we're doing it well, we keep after it. If we aren't doing it well, what do we need to do? Offensive efficiency is an issue. It was a focus last week and it didn't materialize during the game. Need to be honest and critical.
  • Passing inefficiency is fixable this season. We are challenging receivers to catch the football. Making sure we are calling plays that are easier to convert at times.
  • Protection was "embarrassing" at times. We have a lot of areas that we have to improve. If we can improve each a little or one a lot, we can get a lot better.
  • Zach Smith is the starting quarterback
  • The transition of offense isn't necessarily really tough, but the biggest issue has been we've had to ask a lot of players to change position. It's one thing to change systems and another to change positions. Two or three kids from bowl game who started who started Saturday.
  • Start with Baker Mayfield when discussing Oklahoma. Do tremendous job with the offense and attacking you and knowing what you're in. Big and physical and stout on defense against run and pass.
  • See if Ishmael Wilson is able to do anything this week at practice Monday.
  • Terence Williams back from injury and will receive a large portion of carries.
  • We look at the tape to see if we're improving and if the kids are doing more of what we're asking them to do. Regardless of the opponent, we have to run the football and have to be better on third down.
  • Defensively we are getting a lot better on sacks, red zone. Need to be better against the run. Trying to conquer one thing at a time. Nothing to do with opponents and all to do with us.
  • Tell recruits that it's a process and we are going to do it the right way from the ground up. Tell kids that we are recruiting that they will have a chance to come in and play.
  •  A lot of reasons they're struggled on third downs. In third and long way too much. Haven't made contested catch yet. Too much pressure from opposing defenses on third downs.

Except that it is part of his job to talk.

We hired Coach Rhule because he is going to make our program better from top to bottom. Anyone that expected this year to be easy was mistaken. Our receivers must catch the ball when it is there, our linemen must do their jobs in the trenches and Zack must lead this team better. This coaching staff is going to get us there but it won't be overnight.

We are Baylor and we expect excellence. The coaches are good and they expect excellence. The players need our undivided support. We have been through a lot and this coaching staff is going to be the difference maker.
I am a Baylor letterman, a Baylor graduate and I love Baylor.

Third down problems happen because you call slow-developing running plays on 1st and 2nd down. The offensive line problems are real, but when you put the offense into obvious passing downs, don't be surprised when you can't block every player rushing the quarterback. Better play calling=better results.

Not only are the running plays very slow to develop, the pace of the game play is very slow, taking up most of the clock before the snap, giving the other team more than ample time to make adjustments before the snap.

BU will eventually go back to a spread hurry up style of offense if they want to win. Rhule has to decide is it going to be with him as the head coach, or will they have to bring in someone else to implement it.
By the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved.

Forest took the words right off of my keyboard.

I have never seen such slow movement on offense since I watched Iowa play Northwestern.

More like blind hope than anything.

I like Rhule, and I think if he surrounds himself with the right assistants he can be successful. But there is no evidence that he will be. Hiring Nixon and trying to run this "hybrid" Big 12/Big 10 offense at Baylor was one of his biggest mistakes. He should have stuck with what made Baylor a brand. His strength and conditioning coach also needs to be fired, and they need to see if they can bring back a Kaz protege.

Hopefully he will get a clue in the offseason, but there is nothing to suggest at this point that Amarillo is right.

I hope you are right. I think if he does this, you will see immediate improvements.

Speak for yourself. The defense is getting better, the offense is about to get better.

More generally, college students who are learning a new skill or a new way of doing things and working on a team take time to get where they need to be. There's a lot of ridicule on here about "process," but it's always about process, even when you are winning. Getting a well functioning and highly skilled group that can hold up under adversity requires that you work your system and that you trust it. You need your team to internalize leadership, and that's a matter of maturity on the part of your kids. You need your kids to become competent and confident in what their individual roles are in producing the product you are making. They need them to be able to trust each other and to trust their "adult" leadership. When you are following a good process, as long as your kids have the talent and work ethic, you will get to the outcomes you seek.

Don't necessarily disagree with you, but with respect to offense, they could get a lot better and still be terrible because of the type of system being run. Others have pointed out its deficiencies, so I will let them comment.

The play calling is unbelievably atrocious. That is the biggest reason we had so little success on third downs.
