All Sports Report: Soccer and Volleyball Start Strong
Soccer
• The Bears are now 4-1 on the season after taking down Texas A&M 1-0 in their lone match last week. The Bears’ four-match win streak is the longest since the 2018 season.
• In the Bears’ win over the Aggies, BU recorded its first win over the program in 24 years.
• Tyler Isgrig scored Baylor’s lone goal, her first goal of the 2024 season.
Volleyball
• The Bears swept the Baylor Classic with 3-0 matches against Abilene Christian, Tulsa and Campbell.
• Lauren Briseño was named Top Libero/DS, Jackie Barrett Frazier was Top Setter and Kendal Murphy as MVP.
• Allie Sczech had her 500th kill against Tulsa.
• The Bears are on the road Tuesday at Rice for the only away non-conference match of the season, a first for the program.
• Baylor hosts the fourth iteration of the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge on Friday and Saturday with TCU, Minnesota and Wisconsin coming to town.
Cross Country
• XC concluded its season-opening meet on Friday at UIW Twilight in San Antonio, where the women finished 4th and men finished 6th.
• Women were led by grad student Jackie Addy, who recorded a career-best finish and time in the 4k (14:35.6, 8th place). Addy shaved nearly a minute from her previous best time.
• Men were led by Nolan Keenan, who finished in 19th and recorded a PB 6k time of 18:46.9
• Overall, seven Bears left San Antonio with new PB times in the 4k and 6k
• XC will travel to College Station next week for Texas A&M Invite on Sept. 13
Football
• Making his Baylor debut, Dequan Finn threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Bears to a season-opening 45-3 win over the Tarleton Texans Saturday night before a crowd of 42,272 on the 10th anniversary of the first game at McLane Stadium.
• The 45-3 win over Tarleton actually marked the best defensive performance in the program since the 45-0 shutout of the ‘Stangs in 2014.
• Out of Baylor’s six touchdowns on the night, four were made by newcomers (Dequan Finn, Ashtyn Hawkins, Keaton Thomas, Michael Trigg)
• The Bears exploded for 21 first-quarter points
• Baylor heads to #11/11 Utah this weekend to compete in Salt Lake City
Men’s Golf
• MGOLF will open the season at the Gopher Invitational beginning Sunday at Winding Farm Golf Club.
• BU is making its seventh appearance in the event, with two wins in 2014 and 2019
• The Bears will be led by Senior Zach Heffernan, redshirt junior Drew Wrightson and 2024 North and South Amateur Champion, Davis Ovard
