WACO, Texas – The 17th-ranked Baylor volleyball team defeated Iowa State in four sets, 3-1, on Wednesday night during the pair’s sole match of the season.

With the win, Baylor (14-6, 6-3) extended the series lead against the Cyclones (9-11, 3-6) to 33-26 all-time.

Although head coach Ryan McGuyre arrived at “Space Night” in the Ferrell Center wearing a Mandalorian costume and carrying a green light-up sword, he wasn’t the only one bringing the energy. Led by Jackie Barrett Frazier, the Bears met an aggressive Iowa State team with fierce determination, winning the first set 25-23 and claiming the second 25-18. The third set saw a Cyclone victory at 25-19, but Baylor rallied to secure the night’s victory with the fourth set ending 25-16.

Barrett Frazier claimed a triple-double with 16 digs and a season-high 10 kills alongside her 23 assists, while Elise McGhee led the team with 13 kills. Lauren Briseño served up two aces on the night, placing her one away from the 80th of her career.

It was the first triple-double by a Baylor player since 2009 when BU Hall of Famer Taylor Barnes (10k-12d-40a) accomplished the feat at Kansas (11/14/09). Barrett Frazier is the seventh different Bear to record one in program history.

THE RUNDOWN

Set 1

Kills from Alicia Andrew and Tori Davis set the Bears into motion against an aggressive Iowa State team. Baylor was soon propelled into a 4-0 scoring run by a service ace from Lauren Briseño and kills by Davis, Elise McGhee and Jackie Barrett Frazier. A kill by Kendall Murphy tied the set 12-12 before the Cyclones rallied their offense to gain an edge. Barrett Frazier led the charge with three kills, putting the Bears ahead 20-18 and forcing Iowa State into their first timeout of the night. A service ace by McGhee and another kill from Murphy secured the set 25-23.

Set 2

Baylor maintained their momentum into the second set, opening with three service errors from the Cyclones and powerful kills by McGhee and Andrew. A service ace by Murphy allowed the Bears to stay ahead 9-5, and it wasn’t long before a tag-team block by McGhee and Andrew forced Iowa State into another timeout. After back-to-back kills by Allie Sczech, the Cyclones struggled to find their footing and allowed Baylor to claim a 3-0 scoring run. The green and gold never looked back, claiming the win 25-18 on Murphy’s fourth kill of the night.

Set 3

Iowa State gave the Bears a run for their money to open the third set, but another service ace from Briseño and a block by Andrew and Barrett Frazier put Baylor on the board. The Bears continued to fight as McGhee delivered her third service ace of the night and Barrett Frazier secured a joust at the net. Andrew’s continued dominance then set the scene for Davis to deliver a kill that edged Baylor ahead 15-14. But the Cyclones refused to concede, trapping the Bears in a fierce back-and-forth battle before embarking on a 4-0 scoring run and winning the set 25-19.

Set 4

The Bears entered the fourth set hungry, Sczech leading the offense with her fourth kill and Barrett Frazier claiming another jousting victory. Baylor boldly claimed a 5-0 scoring run, including a kill and block by Grace Carroll, before a powerful solo block by Manuela Bibinbe pushed the Bears ahead 10-7. McGhee and Barrett Frazier then rallied the green and gold for yet another 4-0 run, sending Iowa State into a timeout. Davis met the Cyclones at the net with two fearsome kills, increasing Baylor’s lead 18-13. The Bears claimed the night’s victory 25-16 on a 3-0 run led by Murphy and Bibinbe.
