WACO, Texas – Baylor Softball split its Friday doubleheader against North Texas and California Baptist falling first against UNT, 6-5, before defeating the Lancers, 5-3, at Getterman Stadium.

THE RUNDOWN

GAME ONE

The Bears fell behind early in game one when North Texas plated five runs in the top of the first inning. Capitalizing on five hits and a sacrifice fly, the Mean Green’s crooked number in the first was hard for the Bears to battle back from.

Baylor added its first run to the board in the bottom of the second after back-to-back walks put two on for Leah Cran who singled up the middle.

North Texas got a run back in the top of the third to again go up by five runs and take the 6-1 lead.

Brooklyn Carter chipped away at UNT’s lead in the bottom of the fifth when she hit a sacrifice fly to right field, but the Bears still trailed by four runs.

Trying to mount the comeback in the bottom of the sixth, Baylor plated three runs on a double from Karynton Dawson, a single from Cran and a wild pitch to cut North Texas’ lead to just one run, but the comeback would fall short as the Bears couldn’t capitalize in the seventh.

GAME TWO

California Baptist got on the board first in the second game plating a run in the top of the first on a fielder’s choice.

Shaylon Govan and Abi Flores singled in the bottom of the first, but it wasn’t until the second inning when the Bears got on the board. After a lead-off double from Dawson, Ashlyn Wachtendorf laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Dawson before Cran added a run with a single through the left side.

Baylor tacked on three runs to their lead when Dawson notched her first-career home run, a three-run shot, in the bottom of the third to put the Bears up 5-1.

The Lancers cut into the Bears’ lead in the top of the fifth plating two runs on an error and a double to make it a 5-3 game with three innings left to play.

Reliever, Lillie Walker struck-out the side in the top of the sixth to reach 100-career strikeouts and keep the Lancers off the board, before sitting CBU down in order again in the seventh to secure the Bears’ win.
