WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (17-7) picked up its sixth consecutive midweek win with a dominating 13-4 defeat of UT Arlington (7-14) on Tuesday evening at Baylor Ballpark.
BU’s batting order totaled double-digit base knocks (13) with four players recording a multi-hit performance: Hunter Simmons (RSr.), Pearson Riebock (Fr.), Gavin Brozozowski (RSo.) and Travis Sanders (RSo.).
Baylor’s lineup went 7-for-17 with runners in scoring position and combined for six extra-base hits, with the lone home run coming from Caleb Bergman (Jr.) — his first career long ball. Across its last two games, Baylor has outscored opponents, 32-to-8, and out-hit them, 29-to-15.
“We’re not worrying about the future at all,” right fielder Enzo Apodaca (RSr.) said. “The most important game is the game we’re playing right now. I think that’s how we take every game, and it’s been working out so far. That’s why we’ve had so much success in these midweeks.”
Left-handed pitcher Stefan Stahl (Jr.) opened the contest on the bump for the Bears and tossed a scoreless frame; Tuesday marked the 13th consecutive game that a Baylor lefty started.
With the bases juiced in the bottom of the second inning, UTA issued back-to-back free passes to center fielder Ty Johnson (Sr.) and catcher JJ Kennett (So.) to put the Bears on the board.
“I love the production we can get from the bottom of our order,” head coach Mitch Thompson said. “When you got Ty Johnson, Kennett, [Cortlan] Castle and Travis Sanders, you have guys down there at the bottom that can do damage.”
Baylor extended its big inning with RBI base knocks from Apodaca, Simmons and Reibock to give the Bears an early 6-0 lead. Simmons finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI; he has reached base in 30 consecutive games dating back to the 2023 season (he missed most of the 2024 season after suffering a broken leg).
The Mavericks went on to score three unanswered runs across the next couple of frames, highlighted by a solo shot from shortstop Larry Haskins (Jr.) in the third inning.
Simmons led off the fourth inning with a double into the right field corner, and Riebock plated him on an RBI triple. Brzozowski scored Riebock with a sharp single into right field and later came around to score on a fielder’s choice.
Following a three-hit performance in Sunday’s win over Kansas State, Riebock stayed red hot at the plate, reaching base in four of his five plate appearances with two base knocks, two RBIs, two runs and two walks.
First baseman Jack Little (RSo.) and Johnson added RBI hits in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Johnson plated a team-high three runs in the victory.
Veteran righties Caleb Bunch (Sr.), Will Glatch (Sr.), Gabe Craig (Sr.) and Drew Leach (RSr.) combined for six strikeouts and 4.2 scoreless frames. Glatch has not allowed an earned run in eight appearances out of the bullpen this season.
In the seventh inning, Bergman crushed a solo homer over the left field fence, marking his first career long ball and first hit of the season.
“[It was] amazing; nothing I’ve ever felt before in baseball,” Bergman said post-game of his homer. “I’ve only ever had one in intrasquads before, and that really doesn’t mean much. This means so much. In my few at-bats, going up there and letting it rip is awesome. It felt great.”
Final: Baylor 13, UT Arlington 4
W: Bryson Bales (2-2) L: Rhy Stevens (0-2)
POTG: Pearson Riebock (2-3, 2 RBI, 2 R, 3B, 2 BB)
