Top Quotes

Head coach Mitch Thompson on Baylor playing in the Big 12 Tournament:

  • “The good news for our club is that everybody we’ve played this year [in conference play], we’ve beaten. We’re going to go take on Oklahoma State in game one, and hopefully, we can win that game, go to the next one, and keep going. It’s one game four [different] times, which is what we’re fighting to do. It’ll take everybody on the staff and everybody on the team to get through it, but hopefully, we can go out there and play really well and advance one game at a time.”

Head coach Mitch Thompson on facing Oklahoma State again after playing the Cowboys earlier this month:

  • “It’s probably good for both teams. We know them. They know us. We’re pretty familiar with them. There hasn’t been a whole lot of water under the bridge since we’ve played them. I think we feel confident against them. I’m sure they feel pretty confident against us. It’s going to be how it’s been all year; if you go and play well, you have a chance. If you don’t play well, if you don’t pitch well, then the other team is good enough, and they are going to beat you. Our focus is to go and play well.”

Shorstop Tyriq Kemp (Sr.) on playing in the Big 12 Tournament:

  • “I’m really excited. It’s going to be my first time playing in this tournament. It’s going to be the first time for other guys here. I’m going to attack it and have fun.”

Right-handed pitcher Gabe Craig (RSr.) on the mindset going into the Big 12 Tournament:

  • “It’s like we’ve said all season, you have to play one game at a time, and that’s the structure of the tournament. We’ve played really well the last couple of weeks and have gelled together well. We’ve pitched the ball well. We’ve hit the ball well. Keep that momentum and focus on Wednesday, and that’s it, because you can’t get to any other days without winning on Wednesday. You get one game at a time, and you go out there and do everything you can to win that game and go from there.”

Screw job in the 7th
OSU went from 2 outs with runner on 1st to 1 out with runners on 1st & 2nd
Huge difference
Runner on 2nd ended up scoring

Bears can't score in the eighth. Bottom of our order coming up in the ninth. But first we can't let OSU add to their lead.

There was no screw job. That was a routine ground ball. That run was all on us. Make the easy play and nobody scores. That one inning was our season in a nutshell.

Maybe. There is an argument that he is doing more with less. Our talent is clearly below the top of the league, but we were night and day better than last year. That said, there's probably a week of night and days to go before we're competing for the top four in the conference.

He might have been referring to the called strike out that the umpires reversed. The replay clearly showed that the batter swung and missed, but the sound of the ball deflecting off the catchers mitt caused the call to be questioned then reversed. Tough break.

I knew exactly what he was referring to. It's still not a screw job. The very next batter struck out. The very next batter hit it right at our SS who let the ball go between his legs. Winning teams don't do that. They respond to bad calls with solid outs. Bad calls are not screw jobs. They are part of the game, and as far as bad calls go, we got an easy one to get out of and couldn't do it. That's on us not the ump. And winning catchers squeeze that pitch. This one is all on us.
El Oso

We lost for two big reasons.
1. Untimely defensive play in the seventh.
2. Poor offensive production throughout the game:
Three 1-2-3 innings (including the ninth), and it could have easily been five 1-2-3 innings if you look at the play by play. The leadoff batter only got on base in the third, fifth, and seventh. Basically, for 2/3 of the game--we had no offense.

And the fifth inning was a huge example of leaving runs on the bases. First and third in the fifth with nobody out and we only plated one run. Have to do better in that situation.

And then there is this: 1-for-13 (.077) with runners on and 1-for-5 (.200) with runners in scoring position. Designated hitter Hunter Simmons (RSr.) was the lone Bear with a multi-hit performance.

What a miserable program this has become over the last 10 years. Us and Rice have all but packed it in as far as college baseball goes.

Next year should be a make or break season for Thompson with the minimum goal being at least getting to an NCAA regional without having to win the B12 Tourney. It will be season 4 for him and if he doesn't at least have the program at that level by then it's time to move on.
