Head coach Dave Aranda announced on Saturday that junior running back Dawson Pendergrass will miss the entire 2025 season after sustaining a foot injury in fall camp.

The 6-foot-2, 234-pound prospect totaled 774 yards of offense with seven touchdowns during his strong sophomore season and was slated to be a key part of the Bears' one-two punch in the run game with Preseason All-American Bryson Washington.

Washington's gone after this season, Dawson will be the featured back in '26. Next man up for this year.

Saw an IG clip where Aranda said surgery on his foot.

Damn, that hurts. Was one of the reasons I thought this team should be co favorites in the league.

Experienced, hungry o line with seasoned talented complementary backs. This league doesn't have the line play to handle extremely talented, fresh backs over 4 Qs (maybe Techs mercenary d line?).

Still a ton of talent back there but hurts the offense's ceiling a decent amount. Dude was really underrated.

If there is any good news is that Dawson will be coaching up those Freshman. I hope the listen. Dawson is a Character Guy and his football IQ is through the roof.

That stinks. We are deep at RB but he's a bull that will be missed. Get well soon

This sucks majorly. Having the dynamic duo taking turns smashing a D was exactly what kept our O so anchored. Hopefully our young Freshmen can prove they are as reliable as Pendergrass was last year

Huge loss tbh. He was often able to grind out yards here and there when other backs were getting stuffed at the line

Terrible news.
Get well soon, Dawson.

Excellent athlete. His talents and hard driving runs will be missed this year. Take care of yourself young man.

Very bad news. While not the magnitude of losing somebody like Robertson or Washington, he was still about to be an important piece of this season's offense as the physical pounder component to complement the running game. I know overall RB is a position of strength, but I'm not sure who is going to step up to fill this void.

Please do not let these injuries snowball on us.

Even more than losing our "backup", he would have been an incredible short yardage back this year. This increases injury risk for our qb and other rbs in those situations. Hopefully one of the other young guys can step into that role, which is my view is a huge one.

Backup RB's are all large but nothing close to 6'2, 234 lb Pendergrass.
Several over 200 lbs, but young.
Hope the next great back emerges.

Do we have any linebackers who have experience at linebacker?

I think Jeremy Evans played some rb. I would suggest enlisting him or someone like that just be be a battering ram on certain plays. For example if third and 1 and the big 12 championship is not on the line and you just need someone to run into the pile he would be perfect. Another option would maybe be Kelsey Johnson I think but it's great to have a guy about Jeremy's size for this job.

Knighton was an early enrollee. I think he is probably option 1, and could end up having an outstanding year.

We could use Klopfenstein when we need a bruiser running back. Good hands as tight end and he's 6 ft 4 and 250 pounds.

Would love to see that. Hopefully we can find someone for this role quickly.

As a side note, I attended and played at the same high school, Mineola, as Dawson. I was over 55 years before him. Dawson is proof that a great athlete is a great athlete, no matter the size of the high school. I hope he rehabs and comes back strong next year. Seems like a dedicated young man.

How did he get hurt? What is it in practice? Or drills? There's somebody stepped on his foot?

You're right. We will still be a decent team, but this is the type of loss that may cost us a win. You just know there will be a key 4th down and 2 down the stretch and we will get 1 yard. And a bunch of us will be mumbling, " Dawson would have picked it up." That being said, every team will have issues like this.

Injuries do happen to every team, you're absolutely right, so I try not to mope too much about it. However, I'm really getting an uneasy feeling going into the season already down 2 starters - the transfer safety from I think Northwestern that was supposed to be a key starter at a terrible position last year, and a running back in Pendergrass that would 'start' on the 2-deep at many P5 teams. That hurts.
