A week after receiving 76 points and being No. 31 in the preseason edition of the USA Today Coaches Poll, Baylor football received 132 points in the preseason AP Poll, good for No. 28 nationally and No. 7 in the Big 12.

Other Big 12 teams in the top 25 of the AP Poll include reigning conference champions Arizona State at No. 11, Kansas State at No. 17, Iowa State at No. 22 and Texas Tech at No. 23. BYU, which was ranked No. 23 by the Coaches Poll, was the first team out with 156 points.

Utah garnered 144 points in the AP poll to sit just in front of Baylor at No. 26, while other Big 12 teams receiving votes from AP contributors included TCU (4 points, No. 45) and Colorado (1 point, No. 48)

Non-conference opponents Auburn and SMU both appeared in the AP poll, with SMU starting the season at No. 16 and Auburn receiving votes (10 points, No. 37).

SMU opens the season against East Texas A&M, potentially paving the way for a top 25 matchup in week two if the Bears beat Auburn.
