Not a good indicator of good team management.
WACO, Texas – Baylor football (5-5, 3-4) fell 55-28 to the No. 13 Utah Utes (8-2, 5-2) on Saturday night at McLane Stadium.
Quarterback Sawyer Robertson struggled with accuracy all evening, going 29-of-59 for 430 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Wide receiver Josh Cameron led the Bears with 13 receptions for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Baylor’s offense finished with 563 total yards.
Utah’s offense dominated on the ground, totaling 381 yards for an average of 9.1 yards per carry. Quarterback Byrd Ficklin and running back Wayshawn Parker combined for 295 yards.
Baylor’s defense surprisingly started off the game with back-to-back stops, but the offense couldn’t help them out with multiple scoreless drives, one of which was a missed field goal and another where Robertson couldn’t connect with tight end Michael Trigg with what would have been a walk-in touchdown.
The Utes eventually got things going on offense and got their first score on a third and short, where Dampier faked a run before finding a wide-open Dallen Bentley for a 25-yard touchdown.
Robertson’s struggles continued as he gifted Utah with another score, this time a 65-yard pick-six from cornerback Elijah Davis. The Utes led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Baylor’s offense responded with 17 points in the second quarter, but could have had more if Robertson had been more accurate; he missed Kole Wilson for multiple potential touchdowns.
Baylor trailed 28-17 at the end of the second quarter.
Despite a field goal to cut the lead to one score, Ficklin rushed for a 74-yard touchdown, and the Utes never looked back, outscoring the Bears, 27-11, in the second half.
The Bears (5-5, 3-4) will travel to Tucson next Saturday, Nov. 22, to face Arizona (7-3, 4-3) at Arizona Stadium. Game time has yet to be determined.
