Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades is taking a leave of absence for personal reasons. Baylor University released a statement Thursday morning confirming the news first reported by Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports.

The statement from Baylor read, “Baylor Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mack Rhoades is on a leave of absence for personal reasons, effective November 12. The University will decline to comment further at this time.”

SicEm365 has confirmed that Rhoades’ leave is not connected to football, any Title IX matters, or NCAA rules issues.

Executive Senior Associate AD Jovan Overshown and Executive Senior Associate AD Cody Hall will step into the interim roles as athletic directors.

Rhoades initiated the leave, which began on Wednesday, Nov. 12. He is also the chair of the College Football Playoff selection committee and will step down from that role as well.

Rhoades, a two-time national Athletics Director of the Year, has overseen one of the most transformative periods in Baylor Athletics history since arriving in July 2016. His tenure includes 24 Big 12 Championships, eight national titles, and the 2021 NCAA men’s basketball championship, the first in school history.

He also guided Baylor through an ambitious facilities overhaul, highlighted by the $212.6 million Paul and Alejandra Foster Pavilion and the newly opened Fudge Family Football Development Center, reshaping the campus athletics footprint over the last decade.

Rhoades’ leadership philosophy — “Preparing Champions for Life” — emphasized a comprehensive student-athlete model: academic success, athletic achievement, character development, and spiritual growth. That approach became a defining piece of Baylor Athletics’ identity post-2016.

This comes on the heels of the OutKick report last Friday, stating that Rhoades was the subject of a school investigation following an alleged verbal and physical altercation with star tight end Michael Trigg on Sept. 20, when the Bears faced Arizona State. However, sources confirmed Rhoades’ leave is not directly related to the situation from the early-season contest.

Negotiate Mack's buyout now and let's get a new AD hired in the next few weeks in time for the new coaching search.

there is now a second investigation being acknowledged - it is not Title IX or directly football related apparently. He's almost assuredly gone now.

Lot's of folks here assume that will mean Aranda is gone too, but I don't think that's the case automatically.

I think if the team wins out to beat a ranked Utah and potentially a ranked Houston, especially if the team also wins their bowl game, I don't see the new AD cutting Dave loose. Especially if the new AD were to learn that say the terrible NIL approach and starting Finn were both Mack decisions. Dave has taken the blame for those, but that doesn't mean he wasn't just being a good soldier.

Regardless of all that: anything less than an 8-5 finish (whether the loss is reg season or a bowl game) and Dave's job is likely in real jeopardy as a new AD will have a reason to want to put their stamp on the program and fan apathy will be at an all time high with 7-6 or worse record.

A lot of folks won't like it because he is a Mack disciple and worked for Mack his entire career before he got the job at Boise. But to me it just makes the most sense.

I hope we don't let this drag out - having a 2 headed monster interim AD for any length of time is a disaster.

No wonder Baylor is so expensive. We've got more high-priced hired help than is necessary. When the AD is making $3 million, why does he need help?

Or a Scott Strickin at Florida?

His football hires haven't been great and he's in the middle of a search now. Did get a hoops title by not firing the pervert head coach.

1. Only if the big $$$ gators are miffed at his whiffs in football.

2. He started here to gain experience on the way up, which led him to Kentucky and MissSt and Florida.

3. He was here during the Stanton/Steele/Morriss years. Not a good time to remember, unless he learned a lot about what not to do.

Trust me, as a Florida fan by marriage, we dont want Scott Stricklin.
Every other hire has been subpar. Not to mention the horrible hires he has done in women's sports that has led to many abuse allegations.
He got lucky that Todd Golden won the National Championship last year, but even that one is definitely skeevy with allegations of harrasment & cyberstalking of women, including students...

Whoever the next hire is needs to be of impeccable character. We can't keep having a new scandal every decade.

If they're buying out the AD, they're not buying out the coach too.

Let's wait before we declare this a 'scandal' and see if it's truly a substance/medical/mental concern.

Let the Toads and Aggies do a backbend to try and relate it to Bliss/Briles et al.

A scandal need not rise to the level of murder or rape to cause a national black eye.

This one already has, regardless of what comes out in the coming weeks.

Mack's inability to keep his hands to himself (in more ways than one, apparently) has brought national embarrassment to my university ... yet again.

Dellenger says it is a violation of the school's 'faith based' policies. That is probably alcohol, opioid addiction, or boyfriend/girlfriend. His reported disheveled appearance, bad hair color and weird clothing choices could indicate any of the above. The clothes and hair dye suggest a Bobby Petrino situation

Oh come on even Christian's are imperfect. They are going to sin. It's the response to sin that defines character of both an individual as well as a university.

People who want to have only perfect leaders with no issues are the ones sweeping bad stuff under the rug because we can't ever look like we've sinned. That's Baptists through and through.

Assuming Mack doesn't survive, our last four ADs will have all resigned in disgrace, following fairly major scandals -- two of those involving murder and rape. This isn't normal college sports stuff.

I don't view it as a super high bar to hire people who won't embarrass and shame the university with unnecessary off-the-field scandal. But we haven't been able to, whether we've stayed in house or gone outside the Baylor bubble to hire largely respected administrator types, like McCaw and Rhoades. Maybe we're just cursed. But even when our administrators know that avoiding scandal is a major part of their job, they still can't seem to do so.

At this point, I have to think there's some deep-seated institutional issue at Baylor that is causing these things to happen again and again and again. We're batting .000 for almost a half-century as far as avoiding scandal goes. I'm not going to accept, excuse or normalize that as "for all have sinned ..." stuff.

We need to get our **** together ... and in a hurry. None of this is acceptable.

FWIW, those last 4 have been spread out over 30 years. During that same time period, Aggy has gone through 7 presidents and 3 interim presidents, most of whom left over some form of internal kerfuffle (with the exception of Robert Gates, who skedaddled to DC to be Secy of Defense).

I think longevity is a big part of the problem. I would argue that our ADs have held our job for too long. I think we'd be much better off rolling those folks off every four or five years rather than holding onto them for decades at a time.

Extended exposure to the insulated Baylor culture seems to rot one's brain over time.

I think Tom Stanton was just in over his head and incompetent, but it's pretty wild that Ian McCaw went from a straight-laced, milquetoast administrator to a cartel fixer in 10 years and that Mack Rhoades went from a buttoned-up, professional achiever to a disheveled slob in the same amount of time. These people are getting way too comfortable here.

Back in the day, I flew a tremendous number of flights every year (hit Exec Platinum renewal threshold about 7-8 weeks into the year). During that time, was on a flight with Ian McCaw at least 20-25 times (during his Baylor tenure). He was consistently miserable. Visibly miserable. Not a little. Consistently looked like he had just received a cancer diagnosis or similar. Utter unhappiness.

Whatever he was facing in life had him crushed. Not surprised he unraveled. The year McLane opened was on an Eagle flight out of Waco on the day after we upset KSU. McCaw and daughter (think it was his daughter) were on flight. He should have been very happy. He looked less happy than anyone I had ever observed. And he was wearing the cheapest off the rack beige suit that made it worse. Sad clown stuff.
