WACO, Texas – Baylor defensive lineman Hosea Wheeler has been granted a temporary injunction by Judge Ryan Luna in McLennan County, paving the way for Wheeler to get a sixth season of eligibility.
The injunction doesn’t necessarily mean Wheeler is eligible for the entire fall, however. Luna requested a trial date within 90-120 days. If the injunction is overturned, Wheeler would be ruled ineligible sometime between Nov. 9 and Dec. 9. The Bears are slated to play BYU on Nov. 14, Texas Tech on Nov. 21 and Houston on Nov. 28.
Last season, the 6-foot-3, 300-pounder posted 31 tackles, four for loss, 11 quarterback pressures and two fumble recoveries as he played 420 snaps for the National Champion Hoosiers. Wheeler is expected to be one of Baylor’s best defenders, if not the best.
“Today was the first day of pads, and I’ll tell you what, [Hosea] was dominant,” Baylor defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman said last Friday, following a fall camp practice. “You knew when he was out there. It’s a frustrating thing for him, as it is for us, because we care about him. He’s handling it well. He’s expecting to be here. He’s doing everything on a daily basis, like he’s going to be here. He’s sacrificing his body like he’s going to be here.”
Wheeler was originally part of the Pavia v. NCAA lawsuit challenging the NCAA rules that JUCO seasons count toward a player’s five-year eligibility window. However, the NCAA had yet to make a ruling on Wheeler’s particular situation, forcing the sixth-year senior to pivot to seeking a temporary injunction, the same path that saw Clemson wide receiver Tristan Smith and Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby both get ruled eligible for 2026, although Sorsby and Texas Tech later parted ways.
Wheeler was also a two-time all-conference player across three years at Western Kentucky before leaving for Indiana ahead of the 2025 season. The California native began his collegiate career at Sacramento City College, where he totaled 24 tackles and 3.5 tackles.
