Baylor fifth-year senior defensive lineman Devonte Tezino suffered a season-ending leg injury in Saturday’s contest against Prairie View A&M, head coach Dave Aranda confirmed post-game.
“We lose him for the season,” Aranda said. “It was the same thing that happened to Travion Barnes a year ago. It’s really unfortunate that we’re having guys break ankles. It sucks. Tez was playing the best football of his life.”
A Panther offensive lineman cut-blocked Tezino on the second play from scrimmage; he immediately called for the trainers and was later carted off. It’s a brutal blow for Baylor’s defense, as the Killeen native looked poised for a breakout season after posting two sacks and tipping a pass that led to an interception in the season-opener against Auburn.
Last fall, Tezino battled injuries, but he played in all 12 contests with seven starts and finished with 24 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a pass break-up. He’s posted 56 tackles across 29 games in his Baylor career.
The Bears are especially deep on the defensive line, but have lost two starting players — Tezino and safety Jacob Redding — to season-ending injuries already.
