Last game Baylor 36, Louisiana Tech 19 (Sept. 19)
Line Baylor -9.5 • O/U 55.5 • as of Sept. 25

Why This Game Matters

  • Big 12 opener for both teams; first conference home game of 2026
  • DJ Lagway listed as probable after missing two games with a sprained ankle
  • Throwback uniforms: gold-chrome helmet, green jersey, B-A-Y-L-O-R across the chest
  • Colorado is coming off a 41-7 loss at Northwestern and roster discipline cuts
  • Baylor has not won a conference opener since 2022

Series History

  • Colorado leads 10-7 all-time and 4-2 in Waco
  • Last meeting: Hail Mary to force OT, then Travis Hunter strip in 2OT, CU 38-31 in Boulder
  • Last Waco meeting: Colorado 43-23 in 2007
  • Last Baylor home win vs. CU: 42-30 in 2003
  • Colorado this year: W 14-13 at Georgia Tech, W 52-21 vs. Weber State, L 41-7 at Northwestern

Keys for Baylor

  1. Get Lagway going early. He is 0-1 as a Bear and has not played since Auburn. Colorado’s pass defense is suspect.
  2. Stop the Go-Go run game. CU’s strength is the ground attack and four backs averaging 5+ YPC. Brennan Marion needs a big game as OC.
  3. Win the red zone. Colorado is last in the Big 12 in red-zone trips and has allowed seven RZ TDs. Baylor hasn’t finished better than 12th in red-zone offense scoring percentage dating back to 2023 and ranks 13th currently.
  4. Apply pressure for 60 minutes. Aranda expects CU’s best shot after Northwestern. Baylor can’t have a Louisiana Tech type of fourth quarter.
  5. Protect the ball. Don’t give Colorado life with turnovers. Baylor hasn’t done a good job of that this season.

Players to Watch

Baylor: QB DJ Lagway (probable) • RB Dawson Pendergrass • WR Gavin Freeman, Jayden McGowan • LB Travion Barnes • DL Hosea Wheeler, Traevon Mitchell • S Micah Gifford, Devin Turner

Colorado: HC Deion Sanders • OC Brennan Marion (Go-Go) • DC Chris Marve • a four-back run game that’s banged up

Probably not most but it often seems that way. The Doomers won't stop posting it and often little else. It's like a broken record continuing for months.

That's a two edged sword. The "sunshine pumpers", or whatever we want to call them also don't want to engage in technical discourse, and they are often the ones that are the quickest to get pissy with random posters that they've never met, or otherwise feel like they need to Police discussion

There are no sunshine pumpers on this side of the site in 2026, and the fact that you think there are shows how far you've swung to the doomers side of the aisle.

The most optimistic fans on this board are simply saying, "Maybe we should wait and see how this team plays the next four or five games before drawing firm conclusions" and hoping for an 8-4 season. And they're getting shouted down constantly my posters who want everyone to be as miserable as they are.

There is no one here I'm aware of who is still staunchly or unconditionally supporting Dave Aranda. Pretty much everyone is saying he has to reach certain performance goals (most of them reasonably high) to earn another season in Waco. The need some feel to jump on even the slightest praise for this team or coaching staff is not only annoying, it runs people off and shuts down discussion.

Well said. Coaches come and go, but fan base reputations stay for a long time. No one wants to come someplace where no matter how they do, it is not enough.

If you want a good coach, that coach has options. They also have agents that are paid to monitor this stuff. It is more than offering a number. Any Coach worth hiring wants to see affiliation with the Big 4, commitment by the University to get them what they need, recruiting base, a developed booster program, and a fan base that shows up TO SUPPORT. Baylor has enough to overcome, why give them more?

No one is saying to blow sunshine, but geez call it like it is. The team has played well so far. The BU/Auburn game is a candidate for game of the year so far. Empty stadiums, fans that nit pick and boosters that can't be re-won over is not an attractive location.

You make a very good point, but after 7 years, there is such a deep level of Aranda fatigue, from the way he thinks and speaks, to his .500 record, to his game decisions , that so many people almost just want him gone regardless of Baylor's record. Not saying that's good, but it's true.

My thing is even if you feel that way, it's not fair to the players who signed on to play for us and the coaches who signed on to coach them. Those guys deserve to be given a chance, regardless of your feelings on Aranda. Particularly since a lot of them have been major bright spots in the early going.

I think we all have some level of Dave Aranda fatigue. But he's our coach for now. You might as well try to enjoy this season.

All cool. I get it. The mediocre teams that shot themselves in the foot. Throw in his persona and it is tough to generate a following, let's face it we all love the rough and tumble type coaches. Especially in contact sports. The Administration sees him as safe, which is exactly the opposite of what fans want! They want dangerous, gambler, witty or NFLish. Aranda seems like a nice guy, but not winning coach.

My concern is how much are we willing to spend. Like it or not, we are middle of the road in coach's pay and NIL. That gets middle of the road...

I don't care about how good the coach is at pressers and pre-game rah rah speeches. That stuff is just extra.

I just want a coach that is ahead of the game, a better tactician than the coach on the other side, understands how to build and prepare a team to its best ability, and prove it by winning, especially by always having the edge in close games against similarly talented competition.

There isn't that huge a talent disparity in the Big 12, or most other leagues. Win the chess game and make sure every aspect is purring at top efficiency, maximize opportunities, minimize mistakes, dictate the game.

Put it on paper.

I would disagree about the talent difference. College football is matchup football, the recruiting environment of the past 100 years has made it more about the Jimmy and Joe's than the X's and O's. Saban quit because NIL took away his advantage. He no longer had 4 5-star RBs under his control. The Portal and NIL took away his control over those players. It is ALL about getting the player advantages. The most important person going forward is going to be the NIL Coordinator. Who brings the money and who is connected to the agents/handlers. Hell, coaches are leaving coaching to become handlers.

NFL I agree, the talent is pretty consistent and everyone has the same constraints. GMs and Coaching make a huge difference.

I agree to an extent. But we don't play Bama. Tech was supposed to take the world by storm, but now they aren't even the leading candidate to win the Big 12 title. It's a whole lotta meh...

Let's see who gets there and how they do in the Playoff. Would say the odds are it will be one of the big money schools. Maybe we get an IU again, which now is a big money school complete with arrogant coach.

I seriously doubt we get a mid level school winning in the Playoff.

Cignetti, the Don, is an Alpha. Alpha's make some people uncomfortable because they know they're good. They value winning not feelings.

Until he loses. And the same people will be calling for him to be fired and questioning his decisions.

He is at IU, he caught the B10 flatfooted. Let's see if he can keep it up at a school that has never been able to keep it going.

By the way, he value's his feelings pretty heavily...

He wins. Google him.

Curt Cignetti is an elite college football coach. He's not likely to sustain the level of success he's enjoyed to date (he has a freaking.893 career winning percentage), but that dude's going to keep on winning.

His feelings make him about the winningest HC. He doesn't let the risk of hurting someone's feelings keep him from focusing 100% on what he's getting paid to do. Win.

If he gets the players and avoids scandal, yeah he may. He has a track record, so tough to bet against him.
