MBB: Auburn Transfer Davion Mitchell Commits to Baylor

Scott Drew landed a transfer at a need position in Davion Mitchell from Auburn.  The 6-1 200 lb guard was a top 70 recruit coming out of high school.  He averaged 4 points per game and 2 assists in 17 minutes per contest.

He is a tough, physical guard with tremendous bounce and quickness.  He holds a reputation for being one of the best lockdown defenders around.

Mitchell shot 43% from the field; 29% from 3 and 68% from the free throw line on a smaller sample size as a freshman.  His assist to turnover ratio was 1.7.

He was 59% from the field and 43% from 3 as a senior in high school.  He led his team to a state championship as a junior.  His numbers against the top Nike teams in the EYBL were also impressive where he aveaged 15 ppg and shot 36% from 3.

Mitchell will sit out the 2018-19 season as a transfer and will then have 3 years of eligibility left for Baylor.  He will be a major piece of Baylor's future squads.

I have an interview scheduled with him tomorrow for more insight into why he chose Baylor.

as long as Lindsey and Mason stay healthy, we will be really good at PG. But I would expect another guard to help this year anyway.

King is a good ballhandler and so is Mario. I don't think ballhandling/distributing is a great strength of Darius Allen. Mark Vital is also a strong passer.

But we cannot afford for Mason and Lindsey to get hurt as the roster stands right now. Mason may be a top 10 PG in college basketball if healthy. He's super athletic which most people don't know.

I like this pick up a lot. Extremely athletic with some proven bona fides. Plus he played on a state champion high school team and an SEC championship team. I like winners. His Auburn coach saying he was one of the most coachable players he's ever had is not something coaches usually say when a guy transfers. It shows respect.

I'm not sure Tyler Harris would have beaten him out. Give me a 6-1 point guard over a 5-8 point guard any day. Harris may have made the right choice in platooning at Memphis versus coming to play with the big boys. You knew Drew was going to bring in some dudes.

I knew we were probably looking at another 2 year juco PG. Also probably undersized. That qualifies as a dude so yeah. I guess I don't share your confidence in recruiting but like the get. I like him much better than Chuck Mitchell or Harris.
