Linwood, Callahan lead Baylor to comeback victory

Despite another slow start offensively by Baylor (5-0) and a power running game by Iowa State (1-4) let the Cyclones grab a two touchdown lead in the first quarter, Baylor's defense made the stops when needed and the Bears left Ames, Iowa with a 45-43 victory.

Heading into the fourth quarter down 14 points, Baylor outscored the Cyclones 17-0 and Callahan's 19-yard field goal with no time on the clock helped the Bears escape with the victory. The field goal came on the heels of 18 play, 83-yard drive that took the final 4:54 minutes off the clock.

The Bears finished with 647 total yards including 469 yards on the ground. Shock Linwood led the way with a career high 234 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries while sophomore Terence Williams 126 yards and two scores on 16 carries of his own.

Quarterback Seth Russell finished the day completing 12-of-22 passes for 178 yards and a score and added 88 yards and a score on 19 rushing attempts. Freshman receiver Blake Lynch led the Bears with three receptions for 80 yards.

Baylor's first two drives of the game resulted in 16 plays for 53 yards and no points while the Cyclones scored touchdowns on two eight play drives covering 151 yards. Quarterback Joel Lanning completed all seven of his pass attempts in the first quarter for 134 yards and a score.

The Bears were finally able to get on the board on their third drive when sophomore running back Terence Williams ran it in on a 4th down attempt from seven yards out to cut the lead to 14-7, but that was the closest the Bears would ever get.

On Iowa State's next drive which started at the end of the first quarter, the Cyclones took the ball 78 yards on 13 plays and extended the lead to 21-7 with 11:40 in the second quarter.

The two teams went on to trade scores until the end the half, including a rushing touchdown by Russell. The play was originally ruled a fumble and recovery by the Cylones for a touchback.

On Baylor's second scoring drive, Seth Russell connected with freshman receiver Blake Lynch on a deep post for 57 yards which led to a Shock Linwood two-yard touchdown run. Linwood finished the drive with with three carries for 21 yards and the half with nine rushes for 106 yards and a score.

Ball control offense for the Cyclones was successful throughout the half. On their final two scoring drives of the half, Iowa State covered 153 yards over 29 plays including a 16 plays, 75 yards and a Lanning rushing touchdown on their final drive before taking a knee to close the half.

The start of the second half was more of the same for both teams. The Cyclones took the opening kickoff at drove 13 plays for 55 yards and a score. The Bears then answered with a nine play drive for 75 yards that was capped off by Russell's first touchdown pass of the game.

It wasn't until the fourth quarter which Baylor forced Iowa State's first punt of the game with the Cyclones holding a 42-28 lead. Seth Russell and Baylor's offense then went on to cut lead to 42-35 with 11:40 remaining.

Following at 67-yard punt by the Cyclones, the Bears, led by Linwood and Williams, drove 84 yards in 10 plays for the touchdown to knot it up at 42.
