Baylor knocks off Abilene Christian in season opener at McLane Stadium

The Baylor Bears take on the Abilene Christian Wildcats at 7 p.m. at McLane Stadium Saturday night.


1st Quarter

Baylor started off the game with a 13-yard run by JaMycal Hasty but then ran it again on the next play and Josh Malin went down with an injury. The Bears ended up punting on that drive. The Bears scored a field goal after three completions by Charlie Brewer to Hurd, Mims, and Platt. Then Jalan McClendon came in and had two great drives. The first was a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Hurd. The next was a 20-yard strike to Marques Jones right after an interception by Terrel Bernard. The Wildcats then took a deep shot to D.J. Fuller for a 54 yard touchdown. Grayland got burnt and received no help from true freshman J.T. Woods as he was late. The Bears forced three, three-and-outs in the 1st quarter.

Highlights

Jalan McClendon threw a beautiful 25-yard jump ball to Jalen Hurd in the endzone and he went up and high pointed the ball for his first touchdown in a Baylor jersey.

After a beautiful Terrel Bernard interception, Jalan threw a strike to the side of the endzone where Marques Jones came down with a 20-yard touchdown reception.

2nd Quarter

The Bears struck early in the 2nd quarter with a Charlie Brewer led drive that resulted in a 3-yard touchdown run by JaMycal Hasty. The Bears gave up a field goal on the next drive and then JaMycal Hasty went 54 yards for a touchdown. The Wildcats answered with a 75-yard touchdown by Billy McCray. But the Bears responded with a 31-yard touchdown run by John Lovett. Abilene Christian added a field goal before the half.

Highlights

JaMycal Hasty made a nasty cut before blowing by the defense to the house on a 54-yard touchdown run that erupted the crowd.

After giving up a long touchdown run, John Lovett responded for Baylor by making two defenders miss on a 31-yard touchdown run with under two minutes left in the half.

3rd Quarter

Baylor got a three and out to start the 3rd quarter and then scored shortly after on a three-yard touchdown score by John Lovett. The Bears got a stop and then Charlie Brewer threw an interception on a deep ball throw. Abilene Christian scored quickly after that, highlighted by a 47-yard run by Billy McCrary. 

Key Highlights

Denzel Mims blew by the cornerback and Charlie Brewer threw an absolute dime to him for 55 yards.

Connor Martin stepped up a delivered a 50-yard field goal to extend Baylor’s lead.

4th Quarter

Baylor forced a turnover on downs to start the 4th quarter. They also got a three and out on the second possession. After those stops the Bears relied on John Lovett, he had 55 yards rushing a touchdown on the drive. James Lynch became very disruptive as he had a tackle for loss and huge hit on the quarterback that resulted in an incomplete pass. The Bears ran it with Abram Smith to finish the game off. 

Highlights

John Lovett hit the hole hard on his way to a 30-yard run that got the Bears into prime scoring position. They scored five plays later.

James Lynch got into the backfield and hit the quarterback very hard to force a third-down incompletion.
