There isn’t a ton to write about this game as much of it has been written over the past eight plus seasons. Baylor is the top team in the conference and Texas is the top challenger. Baylor has a 1.5 game lead on the conference race with a perfect 9-0 record, but faces a test on the road against an 8-2 Texas team looking to tighten the race. Both programs thrive off the rivalry and national attention is a given when Baylor and Texas square off.

The game takes place in Austin at 6 p.m. Monday, February 4.

If it's all the same with everyone I'm gonna still sweat the road games to
Ames and Morgantown... if we leave there with W's, then I will exhale and begin thinking about the Postseaspn.

Sure this was Kim's strategy. Gives Texas a moral victory and will allow Texas to want to keep their Coach. Love having Aston at UT.

That was a little too close. On the upside, it's good that Texas made this a game. That should keep them in the top 15 and keep the Big 12's resume up. We also needed to be pushed, working against picks...and letting the Moon loose.

Juicy was our Husky killer and Moon was the Horns killer. They committed to making her hit the open shots and beat them and that is exactly what she did. Great performances can come from virtually any of our players making us a very dangerous team.

Solid night by our other starters. Would have loved for a few more shots to fall for our freshmen. It was a big stage, on the road, making their shots a little rushed. They'll get another shot at them in Waco. We'll also get to see how CKM and Kalani work out the triple team.

Bad quarters happen, especially on the road with tired legs against an especially motivated team that know you too well. The ladies gutted out a win against a well-ranked opponent. I'll take that.

Random game thoughts:
How satisfying to beat UT in Austin. Always extra sweet to beat a rival.
Moon! Career high 20 points, but that wasn't the whole story. How about her efficiency, with 7-14 FG shooting and 4-5 FT shooting? How about 5 rebounds? How about 2 steals and a lot of very effective on ball defense; she consistently harassed Sug Sutton and cut off driving lanes. Maybe the most important development tonight is that Moon has now emerged as a legitimate outside shooting weapon off the bench when opponents sag too much on Kalani and Lauren. There will be games when Juicy or DIdi or Chloe are cold; there was a moment in the 1st quarter tonight when it felt like our perimeter shooters, especially Didi, were not going to capitalize on their open looks. It's so important we have someone to consistently hit the open outside shot, and when Moon came into the game she was aggressive offensively and it seemed to spark confidence in everyone. Critical.
Didi! She played an excellent game. 12 points, 5 assists, 4 steals. She was versatile and productive. It was really important that she was able to make shots when her defender sagged onto Kalani. Still, she gets tentative and hesitant when she's open from 15 feet. It's as if she doesn't trust herself, or doesn't want to be too selfish and take all the shots. But it's very encouraging to see her hitting those shots with some consistency; a big improvement from last year.
Hooray that we played a game which was close down to the last minute, and forced us to beat the press and make free throws. We've had far too little of those real game situations this year, and we'll face those situations in the tournament so it's really helpful to see it now. Loved that we started to post Lauren in the middle of the floor on press break. She's excellent in that role, because she has excellent hands and is a nice, tall target to receive passes. She can keep the ball high and out of range of defenders, and she makes excellent decisions once she has the ball in her hands. She's the key to our press break.
Kalani! According to the box score, Kalani had a below average game. But I believe she was our MVP tonight. I don't think Kalani gets enough credit for her presence on the floor and the way it causes opposing defenses to adjust, and how that opens up the game for our other players. Didi, Juicy, Chloe and Moon took a total of 41 FG attempts, and I bet that over half of them were uncontested because their defender was sagging down on Kalani. When Kalani leaves the floor and Queen or NaLyssa replace her, the defense usually plays everyone stratight up and we don't get the same outside looks. Kalani returns to the game, and suddenly we get open 15 footers all night. Kalani had a huge imprint on the game tonight, and Moon's 20 points and Didi's 12 points were a direct result of UT swarming her in the post.

We won a game on the road against the #12 team in the country with the following happening...

1) Kalani scored 2 points in the first half.

2) Juicy was invisible

3) our freshmen went 1 for 9

4) we gave up 9 three pointers.

I will take it. I think I the items above are correctable and will be fixed. In my opinion, it was a big mistake taking out Kalani and Lauren at the start of the 4th. Egbo and Smith weren't quite ready for prime time. And, for those saying Kim should not have slowed down our offense, I disagree. Kim understands basketball and knows that a 21 point lead is hard to lose if you milk the clock. She might have started it a bit too soon, but I agree with the strategy. THIS is a why she wins consistently. When she gets a double digit lead, she rarely loses. Kim, more than anyone, will be disappointed in that finish and use it as a teaching moment.

Kim Mulkey took responsibility for slowing down the tempo during the 4th Quarter. She gave Texas credit for the 4th Quarter comeback. Coach Mulkey said it's hard to win a road game when giving up 46% to the opponent. On a positive note, Kim Mulkey is now 14-1 all-time coaching against Karen Aston. It's also yet another 20-win season for Baylor Lady Bears Basketball for all 19 seasons Kim Mulkey has been the head coach

Winning on the road when you're the #1 team in the country and everyone is going to give you their best shot is hard. Just ask UCONN. A win is a win though.

Moon was the MVP of this game and deservedly so. She's always been a quick, tough defender but now she might start to be an offensive threat too especially with the ability to make a couple of three pointers which has always been an issue offensively and defensively for Kim Mulkey teams because she builds her teams from the inside out.

Juicy was just off last night. She'll get her feet back under her and be fine. She has improved tremendously from last year and a combination of her and an improving Moon Ursin could be lethal.

If Didi can be more consistent offensively like she was last night then it's another added bonus. Her defense is excellent.

I liked that Nalyssa and Queen were able to get some minutes against a quality opponent on the road. They still do freshmen things but I have a feeling they may be required to put in a little quality time when the NCAA tournament comes around. Nalyssa's potential is out of the roof. She and Lauren Cox are the types of players that UCONN typically gets. Next year will be fun with those two. Queen could eventually be a smaller but more athletic version of Kalani Brown.

Lauren has advanced from a sloppy, indecisive freshmen into a confident veteran who lets the game come to her. Really impressed by her unselfishness this year.

When Kalani is on her game she is the best low post in the country.

Chloe has done a great job this season transitioning to point guard. She's the epitome of unselfish play.

Kim definitely made a coaching mistake by trying to bleed the clock because it took her team out of any type of rythym offensively and made them jittery. At the end of the day though good teams find a way to win on the road.

Kim didn't say she made a mistake going into the stall; she said she accepted responsinility for going into the stall TOO EARLY.... Not exactly the same thing. As an earlier poster noted, the stall is a great tactic when a team has a big lead late in the game, BUT need to make sure the big lead is BIG ENOUGH, and the "late in the game" is LATE ENOUGH! Too many turnovers, too many empty one-and-done possessions and too many missed free throws almost made the BIG and LATE not big and late enough! I agree the stall killed the energy of our team, and let Texas settle down and catch its breath offensively. I agree with above poster, it was probably a good thing to expose early that we still need work in this area.

I heard Coach Mulkey speak once after the first National Championship, and her story theme was, "but it was just one possession, Coach," about how one lazy possession, even early in a game...one missed free throw or rebound....could end up being the play that makes a difference in the game. I thought about that when Moon was shooting critical free throws late, and she had missed the first one. I was afraid she would miss them both and Texas might just pull it out. Would she remember her stellar performance up to that point, or hold herself responsible for those missed free throws? Luckily, none of that happened, but boy, these STUDENT athletes really play a high pressure game! I appreciate the entertainment it provides me. Thankful I get to just watch!
