WBB: No. 1 Baylor opens with ACU in NCAA Tournament

The Baylor Lady Bears are the top seed in the NCAAW Tournament and will play the first two games at home. The first opponent will be Abilene Christian (23-9). ACU will be coming in on a four game win streak culminating in a 69-68 victory over Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the Southland Women’s Tournament to secure their ticket to the dance.

First and Second Round Regionalized & Home Market Protection

  • In the home markets of the competing teams, ESPN2 will televise the game of local interest. While constant updates from the other games will be provided in the home market, the networks will not switch to another game during live action, thereby establishing home market protection.
  • For the first and second rounds, multiple games (as many as four) will begin within one telecast window. During those windows, the coverage will showcase the best action for viewers in the majority of the nation (except in the home markets of the competing teams).
  • Select first- and second-round games will be aired in a full national telecast on ESPN or ESPN2, with supplemental coverage on ESPN App
  • ESPN3 will carry the games in full that are not being aired in a national window.

After screwing up the reveal, they should be bending over backwards to show as many games nationally as possible. They can use ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPNNews and then run whiparound with in-studio commentary on Classic. Heck, they can preempt the 2006 Rose Bowl a few times on LHN and I doubt too many people would complain.

I haven't seen any sign of it yet on the "guide," but in past years DIRECTV has used four channels in the 700s to air the four whip around games in their entirety. This allows DIRECTV customers who have the sports package the same advantage as the home state markets for the competing teams. I certainly hope they will continue this practice during this year's tournament, allowing us to watch the Lady Bears' games in their entirety!

If you have DIRECTV sports package, the game will be aired in its entirety on channel 790. That's ECEHD, or ESPN College Extra, if you want to try to find it on other carriers/providers.

On message to the team when in a matchup like this ...
"It's a daunting task.

I saw on ESPN a couple days ago that the 15- and 16- seeds records in the last 29 years are 1-231 losses. It's a really tough matchup for us.

"So the thing we've been talking to our players about is we're just going to control what we can control. We have no control over the Baylor offensive game plan, what they are going to do on defense. All we can control is to work hard and practice every day, focus on the things that we do well. You do need shots to fall for sure. You need some rebounds to bounce your way, as well, and our team just needs to come in and be scrappy. We have nothing to lose at all. Just come in and play with reckless abandon."

My major pet peeve with this team is that the bigs miss way too many bunnies. They've got to make every shot count against the best teams and that comes from concentrating against the ACU's of the world, IMO.

This is really bad basketball. They need to reduce the women's tournament to 32 teams or give the 1 and 2 seeds byes into the 2nd round.

Yep, there are not that many Cinderella teams as there are with the men. The top 16 seeds almost always advance.

The 1s and 2s need these games to knock the rust off, and the NCAA needs these games to draw a home crowd to the first round games. Ask Iowa if they got a game from Mercer.
