Ten Thoughts: Lady Bears vs. Cal

March 25, 2019

This is a usual article done for football, but will try to finish after every game going forward for the Lady Bears.

  1. I mentioned in the preview of making Kristine Anigwe play an entire game. Cox and Brown made her defend and frustrated her on both ends of the court.
  2. Anigwe had a double-double in every game this season and then 13 and 5 tonight.
  3. Didi Richards has found her role on defense and now as a cutter with Brown or Cox in the high post out of a double or triple team.
  4. Juicy being this hot will lead the team to Tampa and another ring.
  5. Chloe having the baseline jumper open punishes teams trying to pack the paint.
  6. Cal tried to be physical, but couldn’t keep it up with foul trouble.
  7. Baylor had fresh legs and took off with defensive intensity in the second quarter.
  8. The 20-2 run in the second quarter crushed Cal’s spirit.
  9. Great to see Nalyssa Smith have a strong game in the tournament.
  10. Last Big 12 team standing.

When our guards score 35, we are unstoppable! Outstanding play all around. Defensive intensity was amazing as always.

The rest of Cal not named Anigwe shot 50% from the floor.

It was a thing of beauty--especially the 2nd quarter!!

BTW, our next opponent is South Carolina--a team the Lady Bears beat in Columbia on Dec. 2 by a margin of 25. Maybe they can double that margin on Saturday.

#2...4 fouls and 5 rebounds. That's balance.

This was the most synchronous I've seen the Lady Bears since their mauling of UCONN. So much fun to watch.

Already watched the replay. What a great game! On the rewatch it appeared that there were several times that Anigwe had an opportunity to get a rebound but one of our girls slapped the ball out of bounds out of her hands. Cox was obviously doing this and she was successful at least 3 times.

On the radio postgame Bill Brock said they told the team to (1) get the rebound, or (2) if you can't get the rebound, make sure Anigwe doesn't get it.

Three thoughts:

1. glad Caldwell decommitted, though when she did, it was a slight slap on the face to the program and stung...

2. At the 3.51 mark in the second quarter, Chloe has an opening, pulls up, and dishes off... she should have taken the shot. she was on a roll. Had just hit two in a row.

3. Wish Ursin got more time. She seems to be stuck in a no man's land. She gets off the bench early with the starters, but when it's trash time in the fourth in a blow out, the freshman get in and Ursin stays on the bench, at times garnering less playing time than HSG or Bickle.

4. If I were Tennessee, I'd go after Gottlieb (really like her); or the coaches at Missouri State

Funny that's she decommited and lost to Baylor her entire collegiate career.

There are some very impressive lines in that BU box score. Don't blame them for not posting it.

Brian's Point #9 -> N Smith 11 minutes 6-10 for 13 points and 8 rebounds (5 offensive). Almost a double double in 11 minutes. WOW

The rest of Cal not named Anigwe had no real chance of beating us by themselves. It was not a case of addition by subtraction.

During the first half, when we ran off and left Cal behind, our defense held Anigwe to 1-11 from the floor.

If we can continue to shoot that well from outside the paint, there really isn't much way to defend this team.

Even so, I don't expect teams going forward to move away from the strategy of packing it in and trying to make the Lady Bears beat them by shooting them out of their zone. They just have to hope the shots aren't falling.

The only game to think about is South Carolina.

I agree. And from here on out, every team we play is capable of beating us.

Someone else alluded to this, but Cal might be the most complete game the Lady Bears have played since UConn. But it is sobering to think that we held UConn to a historically low FG percentage (for them) and they still hit enough threes to be right there, on our home floor, in striking distance of victory in the fourth period.

Against these teams in the Sweet 16, you can play a great game and still have to grit it out. And just because we blew out South Carolina early in the season doesn't mean we're 25 points better than them right now, even if we play well.

I believe Kim will have them focus, and Cal is a great game to build on, but they'll all be tough from here, and you have to avoid looking beyond the next game.

I think we have several recipes that can win, but this one makes it easier. Obviously, we have to make the shots.

Thankfully Juicy did what shooters should do - keep shooting, after starting 0-4 from 3pt line, and more importantly, her teammates got her the ball. Chloe can make her own shot. Juicy is learning but seems to need the assist when she is open.

Once they are hitting, we own the court. I don't think any one can play Lauren and Kalani one on one.

Point taken. I'm just excited about the prospect.

I'm on sicem all the time, I just never post, however, just to share, I frequently troll other schools fan forums. Most South Carolina fans feel they have no shot, same with most Iowa fans if we happen to meet. As for Louisville fans, they feel we'll be the first 1 seed to go down. Of course, if we play like we play last night, doesn't really matter what other teams think. Sic Em all the way to Tampa!!

If we do face off against Louisville, no doubt a tough team, I hope that information makes its way to the coaches and players! IIRC, Mulkey & Walz have some bad blood. Should make things interesting.

Thanks for posting this. I watched the first half on ESPN2, and then they switched over to other games and never came back. So I saw none of the second half.

I re-watched it basically because the bulldog in me just likes to shake the poor victim a few more times. Although we won the second time around as well, I'll have to say I was more impressed the first time.
