Matt Rhule reflects on his tremendous amount of respect for Kim Mulkey
Matt Rhule paid his respects to Kim Mulkey and the Lady Bears as he said he was “fired up” for their chance at a National Championship title on Sunday against Notre Dame when he spoke to the media following Saturday’s scrimmage.
“It’s a lesson for all coaches,” Rhule said about his colleague Mulkey. “She never lets up. It’s not about whether they win or lose. It’s about the game itself and the basketball itself and she wants it played at a certain level.”
Rhule said he noticed Mulkey’s inspirational coaching ability sitting behind the bench at Texas, noting “she coaches hard and she coaches that way all the time.”
Rhule said that he has a “tremendous amount of respect” for Kim Mulkey and loves the way the Lady Bears play. He said that he loves the way the team supports each other, similar to how he felt about the men’s team this year. Under difficult circumstances with injuries, the team still managed to stay together as a unit and support each other every step of the way.
“It is done, culturally, at a high level from the top down,” Rhule said about the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Rhule said he especially loves the coaching culture at Baylor, as he said he would receive texts from Mulkey when the football team was 0-5 to “get it going” and praises from both Coach Scott Drew and Mulkey after big wins this past season.
“That’s one of the cool things about working at Baylor,” Rhule said. “All the coaches support each other.”
Rhule said he is excited for Sunday and believes the Lady Bears “will play great.”
The Lady Bears face off in the National Championship game on Sunday against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 5 p.m. CT. The game will be televised live on ESPN.
