Bears lose more than game against Oklahoma
NORMAN, Okla. — Not only did Baylor lose their third game in a row on Saturday against Oklahoma 45-24, they also likely lost starting quarterback Seth Russell for the remainder of the season with a dislocated ankle for the second consecutive year.
The Bears traveled to Oklahoma with hopes of bouncing back from a blowout loss to TCU last week at home, but after two first quarter touchdowns by Sooners and a Seth Russell interception at the one-yard line, those hopes were all but lost.
It didn’t take long for the No. 11-ranked Oklahoma Sooners to get on the scoreboard. After a touchback to begin the game, the Sooners drove 75 yards in 3:49 and found the end zone when quarterback Baker Mayfield scrambled for a 15-yard score. Mayfield finished the game 20-of-25 passing for 300 yards, two touchdowns and an interception through the air.
After turning the ball over on downs, Baylor’s defense held the Sooners to a punt and took over at their own two-yard line. The Bears suffered a three-and-out and put Mayfield and the Oklahoma offense in position for their second score of the game.
Baylor’s offense proceeded to take their next possession 65 yards on 10 plays and looked to be in great position to cut the lead in half, but Russell’s first interception gave more momentum to the Sooners. Oklahoma went on to their lead to 21-0 on a 91-yard drive.
The Bears were able to grab some momentum late in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 21-10 on a Chris Callahan field goal and a KD Cannon touchdown reception. An Orion Stewart interception on Oklahoma’s following drive gave the Bears the ball back immediately, but a Russell fumble on a quarterback run gave the Sooners the ball back just before the half and the momentum was lost.
The Sooners went on to score three touchdowns on four possession to start the second half, and the Bears, who lost Russell to an ugly leg injury on their third possession, could not respond rapidly enough to keep pace.
Russell finished the game 15-of-31 for 148 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Baylor turned to Zach Smith to replace Russell and the true freshman led the Bears to two touchdowns in four possessions, including a 62-yard touchdown, connecting with Cannon for the junior’s second score of the game. Smith also scored a rushing touchdown on a quarterback sneak.
The true freshman from Grandview completed just 6-of-15 passes, but totaled 144 yards through the air in less than a half of play.
