Lombardi: Stidham a top-round pick if he had stayed to play for Rhule

With experience as an executive the in front offices with the 49ers, Browns, Eagles, Raiders and Patriors, Michael Lombardi is one of the most knowledgable members of the media when it comes to covering the NFL.

SicEm365

In Lombardi’s podcast The GM Shuffle, he gave a sizzling hot take on the newest backup quarterback for the New England Patriots and former Baylor and Auburn starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Stidham, a five-star signee with the Bears out of the 2015 recruiting class, transferred to Auburn after Baylor head coach Art Briles was fired in May of 2016.

After initally annoucning his to stay and finish his career in Waco via Instagram, Stidham later backtracked and spent a fall semester at McLennan Community College in Waco before heading to Auburn to play for Gus Malzahn. Stidham had the chance to return to Baylor after his semester at MCC, but decided against it despite Baylor hiring Matt Rhule in early December of that year.

Despite being classified as arguably most natural and gifted passer in the draft, Stidham fell to the end of the fourth round. According to Lombardi, had he simply stayed in Waco and played for Rhule and former NFL quarterback coach Glenn Thomas, he would have been off the board in the first two rounds.

“Really if the kid was smart, he would have stayed at Baylor with Matt Rhule,” Lombardi said. “Because if he plays with Matt Rhule at Baylor, he’s probably going to throw. He probably would have been a first or second-round pick. He’s easily better than Daniel Jones if he plays in an offense that would have highlighted what he can do.”

Jones was the No. 6-overall pick in the draft. Stidham was the seventh quarterback taken behind Kyler Murray (Oklahoma), Jones (Duke), Dwanye Haskins (Ohio State), Drew Lock (Missouri), Will Grier (West Virginia) and Ryan Finley (NC State).

With three years remaining of eligibilty, Stidham’s departure left Baylor to rely on true freshman quarterback Zach Smith to take over for an injured Seth Russell in 2016. Smith would begin the 2017 season as the backup to transfer Anu Solomon before eventually moving back to the startingn lineup when Solomon was sidelined for the season with injury. Smith was then replaced by true freshman Charlie Brewer and opted to transfer in the offseason.

Brewer, Rhule’s first high school quarterback recruit at Baylor, threw for 3,019 yards and 19 touchdowns as a starter in 2018 while adding 375 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.

Stidham threw for 2,794 yards with 18 touchdowns in his final season at Auburn with 72 rushing yards and one score.

It's more a story about how an underprivileged Test Tube QB 2.0 was handled by those who had business interests with those with career coaching interests. Happens all the time in college basketball, where underprivileged are taken advantage. Here, a guy was poorly handled by some back to the wall white rednecks and sent to play in systems that cost him (but not the handlers and coach interests).

I think the Briles clan (and staff) was looking to burn the whole thing to the ground as an act of revenge against the BOR. They got some revenge. But it appears the BOR had the last laugh and Stidham lost million$$$ in the crossfire.
Sexual assault at Baylor was/ is an institutional problem. The football program took the bullet and the blame. It is the BOR that burned down Baylor and scurried for cover under the rocks. Young Mr. Stidham is going to be just fine and probably saved his football career by leaving the Baylor **** show.

Wrong as usual. The PH investigation uncovered all the problems of the Briles regime coincidentally. The football program's problems were a complete separate issue from the school's Title 9 issues. The BOR correctly made the decision that Briles needed to go.

It is the leadership of Baylor killing Baylor Football that did a job on me. We are now the Texas Bowl Champs so all is well in the world. Brian, the Cotton is one of most important Bowls of the year, played on New Year's Day by Top 10 teams. Just being selected is awesome. That's the difference, and I doubt anybody's to torn up about a copper bowl.

And winning is awesomer. It is selective revisionism to suggest that participation was suddenly good enough after a terrible let down and snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory.

Not sure where this conversation went...

I think Stidham made the right decision going to Auburn. 2018 wasn't his best, but they had a lot of success in 2017 - beating both Bama and Georgia.

If you were going to be honest about it, you would have done the same thing. Like RGIII, it appeared he came to BU b/c of Briles more than anything else.

I don't think he necessarily "lost money" with his decision (didn't realize his accountant posted on here). If he can win the backup job to Brady, then he'll have the best job in the NFL. See Jimmy G (SF) and Jacoby Brissett (Indy).

Well, a few thoughts:

1. A program winning big games is not the same as the QB performing well in those big games, the QB otherwise having a great season, or the QB developing towards the NFL. Those 3 concepts are very different.

2. At the time Stidham transferred to Auburn, he was aware that Auburn wasn't particularly well known for developing QBs, as the only QB that did much under Malzahn transferred from a community college (Nick Marshall; think of this like LSU's QB play with its only good QB recently memory under Miles coming from a community college). As a result, transferring to Auburn was almost certainly not the best choice for him even if transferring was somehow in his best interests.

3. If transferring to Auburn, as opposed to staying at Baylor or transferring to a different program known for good QB play and development, caused him to be drafted in the 4th round versus the 1st round, he definitively lost money. He may stay in the NFL longer than 4 years (average length), however, if he doesn't, he lost money, and, if he does, he lost money on his first deal. Either way, he lost money.
CNC

Again, if I was him, I would absolutely left Baylor for any other school. Stidham also considered A&M and Florida, before deciding on Auburn. He went there for a reason. He had a great college career, at minimum. Not many people can say they beat the #1 and #2 in the country in the same year. Jarrett can.

As far as the past, I think he'd get 1st round consideration if Briles never left. JS would have broken every record BU has ever had. Briles did put 2 QB's in the NFL, out of the 4 he had here (Florence for 1 year, S Russell who had no chance due to injuries). I'm not including Kolb & Keenam he had at UofH.

Staying with Rhule would made him a 1st rounder is a cop-out. Not an anti-Rhule post, but I don't remember him or his staff putting a 1st rd QB into the league. The only QB I heard Coach Thomas linked to is Matt Ryan - AFTER he was already an established NFL QB. One scout opinions doesn't do much here. I think that's connecting a lot of dots that aren't even there.

The x factor is the aforementioned offensive line. If he had gotten hurt, he wouldn't be in the NFL conversation at all. A legit concern. We didn't exactly protect our QB's very well.

He handled it like a handled ghetto basketball player and then he was sent to another school that had an offense not fit for him.
At least transfer to a place that could develop him. He would have likely ended up at Aggie without ghetto handling being present in his transfer.

Auburn was thrilled he beat a few teams his first year. They would have prefer to forget him last year. It was fun to watch him run around last year with his suspect bad back.

There's plenty like him. Don't see them as much in football.
Why did his self interested handlers send him to Auburn? Auburn wasn't a pro style offense and he needed to develop his game,

Did you hear the ESPN commentary when he was drafted? I was hoping it would continue with Mort discussing his back and a classic Mel spinning off a draft pick.

Saxt, no one is saying that ANYONE is innocent in the Baylor dibacle. So quit lying. The problem is that the BOR, who have micro-managed Baylor for decades with no accountability, had lack of Institutional control, and have only fought to protect themselves while succeeding in making football and Briles appear to be the only guilty ones. So how about you having a balanced view for a change.

I never said the BOR were not at fault for what happened. They were asleep at the wheel. They did the right thing firing Briles though. You need to move on and quit making the BOR the centerpiece for everything wrong in your life. Your posts get tiresome.

Agreed CNC. The only reason that this is news is because of the NETWORK and its supporting staff who are still piling on our program. The only thing that I think Stidham did wrong was making a promise to his teammates that he was going to stay after CAB got fired. I firmly believe that the only reason that he landed at Auburn was because the relationship between Gus and Art. The ghetto statement is coming from ignorance. Who says "Ghetto" in the world today? I will let you answer that for X. I was fortunate enough to have spent some time with Stidham. He seems like a good young man. We wish him the best.

As far as you telling us about how he handled his business properly, you are just flat ignorant. In fact, had you watched the NFL draft on ESPN (the network that that owns college football and can end the career of a shady ball coach) discussed how he was wrong transferring to a place where they didn't teach him a pro offense and the fact his choice cost him rounds in the draft and MONEY. It was a slap in the face to the former regime and their handlers. Your opinion is not the same opinion the draft experts (including Mort) and in fact is the opposite.

He was clearly handled by some woods who were too ignorant and sent him where the handlers had friends. It was about the handlers, never about getting him to a place where he could get drafted higher. It's just like the ghetto handlers but with peckerwoods in charge.

I tell my kid - it's not where you start, it's how you finish.

This is a good situation for JS. He's earning enough money to have a nice life post football. He'll learn a ton about the game without having the pressure to play right away and frankly, the Pats know what they are doing. They know he is a better talent than those drafted before him. He was a steal at this round.

Best of luck to him.

We get the fact he is getting a nice rookie contract. Do you not realize that half of those drafted will be broke in 3 years? It's why they don't go on strike for very long. Not too many of them are financial planners when they get their big money and live paycheck to paycheck. Also, a degree in stretching doesn't do much to teach financial planning.

The fact he is getting more than 99.99 percent of the population doesn't change the fact that had he not been handled by self serving coaches and their handler friends, he would most likely gone to a school better suited for NFL development than a high school. Thus, he would have been drafted higher and made more money like ESPN's draft experts mentioned when he was drafted.

First, my apologies to Thee for lumping him with X. That was not fair. And probably pretty embarrassing. Being lumped with X is probably only mildly less embarrassing than getting busted by a transgender street walker. Hugh Grant might be able to tell us. X takes himself way too seriously. Even Thee can lay off the BS.

X,
Recently you said (among other things)
"I hope he goes to a team with a terrible offensive line with zero running game and a shaky starting quarterback." - Did Stidham Get Drafted thread recreated by x.

So the obvious question is - why do you care about JS now?

Rest of your post is BS. You don't know the longevity, quality of play, size of paycheck, possible endorsements, financial planning he has, etc. of Jarrett Stidham. No clue whatsoever.

No one does, not even Mort!!!!! You're the only guy on the planet that takes their word as gospel.

For the record, I do not know JS or his family. I take issue of grown men taking cheapshots at a young man who moved on (and rightfully so) from Baylor for greener pastures. He owes Baylor nothing!! None of those who left also owe Baylor nothing!!!

Hey, when all is said and done, JS is a QB, being drafted by the Patriots, learning the ropes behind the GOAT.

You just don't get a better opportunity. I hope he makes the best of it.

Not many people get such an opportunity. Even people with equal talent.

Thee wasn't really lumped in. He's always the victim. Just said JS is walking into a better situation (financially and professionally) than Thee did, and JS will be getting paid more than 99.9% of the population - not a bad gig.

If I could post it as a kid's pop-up coloring book so you two could understand it, I would.

No, I really did hope he would drafted by a crappy team. I wouldn't run away from it. I want him to get traded. I want to see if he has a bad back.

Where is mom and dad? Why live with a handler tied to a coach? This is what they do with inner city kids to take advantage of them. There's no parents and it's like basketball kids. Someone is missing.

He will get endorsement deals standing on the sideline. I m sure Paul Mitchell will love his locks.

X and CAB/JS are very similar to Texas Scientist and his claim there is no god.

You both claim to have no interest in the subject but, neither of you can go a day without posting about the item of your disinterest.

I'm not sure if this part of the story(ies) is comedy or tragedy.

Are you really a lawyer? Why would you say something about a kid trying to make a living with his talent? Who cares about CAB in this picture? Pathetic. No one talks about the former coach at all. Why in the world would you want someone to fail? Wow

I brought the A team out today.

I am paying customer. I want him to get battled tested because I like many other fans including Texas Tech do not root for him.
I am curious if his back injury didn't initially appear at Baylor thanks to OU.

Is that why you are upset? Stidham could have stuck around and made a difference in a pro offense. Remember I just mentioned what was factually stated on ESPN.

CNC, this board is entertainment and passing time while doing other things at a keyboard. You 'll need to keep us NFL fans updated on the Patriot camp and life as Tom Brady's backup. Best job in the history of backup QBs.

Stidham made the right decision to leave. At the time, for all we knew, the BOR was going to voluntarily discontinue football to save their own asses. Nothing would surprise me with that bunch. Then and even now.
