Ten Things: Iowa State

September 28, 2019
21,980

Baylor and Iowa State squared off Saturday September 28. Here are the ten things which caught my eye:

  1. Have to convert points
  2. Brewer took a hard shot. Good to see him back in the game.
  3. What an interception by Jordan Williams
  4. Prayers to Cole Maxwell as that looks like another ACL or hyperextension at the least
  5. Have yourself a game Denzel Mims‍
  6. Tyquan Thornton‍ is still fast
  7. Game is 4 quarters, can't have mental breakdowns
  8. Facemasks extend drives
  9. Redemption is real, congrats John
  10. 4-0

Lots to like, lots to cringe about, but most importing thing is that W. Sic 'em forever!

Good list.

We played a lot better than last week. Didn't play great the entire game but had some really good drives and some very good defensive series. The 3rd BU TD drive was excellent work.

I apologize for the penalties. I had just commented to my wife that I was impressed that we only had 2 penalties for 20 yards. 1 drive later, we had more 3 personal fouls. Sorry folks!

In the SFA game I remember commenting on how there were none after several minutes of the game. Next play: penalty!

I still don't believe in jinxes.

#3 Jordan Williams INT:

One of the best parts about this was that it happened right in front of Coach Matt Campbell!

This greatness cannot compare that Jordan had his first career INT. Kudos to him! But that does make it particularly delicious for Baylor fans.

Number 1 on my list was this was not the same team that played Rice last weekend. Kudos to players, coaches and fans for making sure of that.

Maybe. But in both games I thought we should have had more points--especially considering how many opportunities that seem to have been missed. Maybe I'm just too spoiled: for several years this decade Baylor's explosive offense dropped 40-50 points in teams like this. And they did to both Rice & ISU--each experienced a 70 point Baylor thrashing.

Comparing this Iowa State team to those old teams is to vastly underrate/underestimate Matt Campbell's Cyclones. Those past ISU teams were average/slightly below average in their best years and terrible in their worst. The past two or three ISU teams have been legitimately good, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

True. But I still think Baylor should have been able to put a couple more scores on the board.

On what do you base those expectations? Iowa State hadn't allowed more than 20 points in regulation all season. That's a damn good defense.

This game was always destined to be a low-scoring, grind-it-out affair.

If some of our mistakes had not happened, I can see how we could have at least 1-2 more scores. If we could have played more of the successful offense in other parts of the game, it could have resulted in more scores. I'm speculating probably way too much.

It doesn't matter: we won and that's all that does matter.

We definitely should have had three more points. A 38-yard field goal needs to become a reasonable expectation for our kickers.

I just didn't see too many other good scoring opportunities that we failed to capitalize on. Other than the missed field goal, we pretty much made the most of our limited chances. We could have executed better on a play here and there certainly, but Iowa State makes it very difficult to sustain and finish drives.

Like I said, I'm spoiled even if this is a much better Iowa State team.

I'm very pleased with the win but I'm also a bit concerned going forward. I did not have many doubts about going to Manhattan but now after 2 weeks of lowered expectations I'm beginning to wonder. I still think we can win but I also know how difficult it is for Baylor to win their historically. (no pun intended)

We had some drive killing drops that may very well have led to points and a missed fg. They got some points off of some run-for-your-life scrambling until someone finally came open.

I think we have learned they we can move the ball with some quick passes (NOT bubble screens).

I expect to see KSU throw plenty of blitzes at us as well. Let's see what the coaches throw in to slow down the blitz.

I think with better execution, less drops, and probably a few better play calls we could have scores almost 40 points.

If you expected us to beat this Iowa State team handily, your expectations probably needed some lowering. I understand being disappointed by our performance against Rice. I was too. But the Iowa State game was always going to be a battle. Any win in that one is a good one.

Maybe.

I just remember during the game there were a few times I thought we could have/should have scored & did not.

As I keep saying though, I am pleased with the win and look forward to more success going forward.

Sic K State!

They also haven't played an offense with a pulse. I don't think it's very controversial to say that the offense shot itself in the foot and had bad stretches of play that had nothing to do with what Iowa St. was doing.

I think there were individual plays for which that was the case, but to suggest that the Iowa State defense had nothing to do with our slow stretches is inaccurate IMO.

It's also inaccurate to say the Iowa State defense hasn't played anyone with a pulse considering we're now dealing with a three-year sample, and the same schemes -- and players, in a lot of cases -- have consistently shut down -- or at least slowed -- some of the best offenses in our conference. Iowa State has consistently fielded excellent defenses during Campbell's time there, and this one is starting right where the last two left off.

I didn't say Iowa St had nothing to do with our slow stretches. But a lot of the bad offense we endured yesterday was self inflicted (again) and, unless we are playing the Alabama's and Clemson's of the world, there is no reason for our offense to have 65 total yards in the first quarter, 46 of which came on the very first play of the game for the offense, which meant we had 19 total yards for the rest of the quarter on the next 11 plays and we had 9 total yards on 6 plays in the 2nd quarter until we ended the half on a TD. That is downright atrocious and NOT because ISU is some juggernaut on defense.

ISU has a very good defense, don't get me wrong. But I don't think it's a coincidence that their rise in defense has also coincided with the downfall of some of the elite offenses in the Big 12 at the same time (Baylor, Ok St, Tech and TCU to lesser degrees). The only elite offense left in the Big 12 is OU and that will help make all the defenses look better.
