According to David Smoak of ESPN Central Texas, Baylor head football coach Matt Rhule has agreed to a contract extension that will take his deal with Baylor through March of 2028.

Last year Oklahoma State finished 7-6. Not great, but still a winning record. Maybe ISU will continue strong the rest of the season with wins over TCU & OU like 2017. I'd be pleased if they beat Texas too.

I don't consider this team, or the improvement they are showing, as "mediocrity" at all. Rhule and the team are doing great...just don't think an extension through 2028 is merited at this point.

When you're a traditionally mediocre program with a coach in high demand, you don't have the luxury of waiting for the results to match your expectations. If you feel confident in the direction you're headed, you strike before a competitor can.

If nothing else, this should raise Rhule's buyout and make him harder for the NFL or a blue-blood program to steal. It also sends a strong signal to recruits and our current athletes that we're building something lasting and significant here. All of those are good things.

This is the reason. Baylor wants to clamp down on the speculation every year that he will go to the NFL. It won't necessarily die completely, but it might lessen it a bit.

I think we can take them at their word as well: Baylor football does seem to be on a positive trajectory. How far this will go is anybody's guess but no Baylor fan (except maybe the cow & frog trolls) expects Baylor to be 7-6 again this year. The bar has been set higher--by Matt Rhule--& no doubt it will be high in 2020 as well. That's also a good thing.

A contract extension isn't good enough for you. So, a statement would just be attributed to typical coach speak.
