Baylor loses 24-21 regular season finale to No. 16 West Virginia
After clinching a bowl after homecoming against Kansas, Baylor has now split the season 6-6 after losing to No. 16 West Virginia 24-14 in the season finale. It was probably for the best that kickoff was at the same time as Baylor basketball’s top-ten tip-off with Xavier with the Bears winning 76-61.
Throughout the game, updates of the football game were going well for awhile. In the second quarter, Baylor even held a 14-3 lead and came out of halftime with a four-point lead. But that tune changed in the second half as the Mountaineers climbed to a 24-21 win despite the best of Baylor’s efforts to comeback on top that included recovering an onside kick with 2:39 that was ultimately overturned due to an illegal block followed by West Virginia recovering the re-kick.
Trailing by 10 with under three minutes remaining, Zach Smith hit up Ishmael Zamora for a 43-yard score to pull the game within a field goal. It was Smith’s second touchdown over 40 yards on the evening having hit KD Cannon with a 60-yard strike to jump to an early lead.
Those two passes made up nearly half Smith’s yardage. Zamora hauled in seven more receptions an Cannon added another four. The pair combined for 186 of Smith’s 244 yards. Chris Platt and Jared Atkinson both added one reception each.
Smith finished 15-of-31 and along with the two touchdowns had two interceptions, though neither led to Mountaineer points. The Baylor defense forced a turnover on downs after the first turnover as passing woes were not unique to Baylor, as West Virginia’s Skyler Howard was 10-of-26 for 111 yards but had a couple of touchdowns leading to 61 team rushes.
It was Justin Crawford’s world and everyone else was just living in it. The Mountaineers freshman had 209 yards on 28 carries. Martell Pettaway added another 63 yards on 16 carries.
Baylor’s running backs totaled 195 yards on 32 carries with Terence Williams leading the way with 90 yards on 11 touches. More than half that yardage came on a 48-yard dash that led to his only touchdown of the game.
With the loss, Baylor finishes the sixth in the Big 12 standings at 3-6 in conference play. The Bears are projected to play in the Cactus Bowl on Dec. 27 and look to avoid their first losing season since 2009.
