Former Baylor Bear, current THSCA President to join Rhule at Baylor
Baylor is set to hire former Baylor football wide receiver and current Texas High School Coaches Association President David Wetzel of San Antonio Reagan High School to an off the field position. Wetzel is the Head Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach for the Rattlers.
David Smoak of 1660 ESPN in Waco was the first to report the news.
Wetzel played his collegiate football under former Baylor head coach Grant Teaff from 1987-1991. Wetzel began his career as a walk-on for the Bears before earning a scholarship and earning two letters.
Wetzel will give instant credibility to the Bears from all areas of Texas and become the first staff member for Rhule with significant ties to the recruiting landscape in Texas.
Wetzel began his high school coaching career at CE Ellison High School in Killeen in 1992 and made stops at Hyde Park Baptist High School and Killeen High School as the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach before landing at Ronald Reagan High School in San Antonio 2004.
In 2005, Wetzel led the Rattlers to their first winning season in the history of the school at 6-4 record and then went on to finish 9-5 in 2006. From 2007-2009 the Rattles combined for a 31-8 record and won three district championships.
From 2011-2015, the Rattlers won double-digit games in all but the 2012 season and finished the five-year stretch with a 52-10 record and five trips to the playoffs.
In his final season at the high school ranks in 2016, Wetzel and the Rattlers finished 9-2 with a loss in the first round of the playoffs.
Coach Wetzel and his wife Shana have three sons: Garren (21), Skyler (17) and Chase (13).
