Baylor (4-1) advances to the finals of the Myrtle Beach Invitational 4pm CST Sunday November 24th. The Bears face Villanova (4-1) who beat Mississippi State. Baylor handled Coastal Carolina (3-3) on their home floor with a 77-65 victory.
Positives
- This was a strength and conditioning win. The Bears physically and mentally exhausted Coastal Carolina down the stretch.
- Davion Mitchell and Mark Vital are playing defense at an elite level. Davion Mitchell should be Big12 defensive player of the year if he keeps this up. Good to see some offense come around for him: 15 points; 6 assists and only 1 turnover.
- Mark Vital was a crucial force for the Bears: 10 points; 9 rebounds; 2 assists; 3 steals; 1 block. His energy is invaluable.
- Solid offensive outputs from Macio Teague and Jared Butler. Teague had 21 points and no turnovers. Butler dealt with foul issues but chipped in 12 points and only one turnover. Those two combined for 5 assists.
- Nice to see Matthew Mayer add 6 points in the first half and also cause two turnovers with his defensive pressure.
- Forced 22 turnovers
Needs Work
- 3 point shooting (33%) should get closer to 40%. We are getting open looks and need to knock down uncontested shots.
- Defense outside of Mitchell, Butler and Vital was suspect at times. Coast Carolina shot 51% from the field; 64% from 3 and also outrebounded the Bears 29-26 on the glass.
- Post players need to play sounder defense without fouling. Too many drives resulting in lay-ups for Coastal Carolina until the last 8 minutes where the Bears put the clamps down.
