ESPN four-star quarterback Blake Shapen‍ (Shreveport, LA/Evangel) has given his verbal pledge the the Baylor coaching staff following an official visit to Waco this weekend. Shapen (6-0, 192) was offered by the new coaching staff earlier this week.

Shapen will also play for Steve Rodriguez and the Baylor baseball team. Shapen is considered one of the top baseball prospects in the country and is a candidate to be taken in the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft.

The former Arizona State pledge opened up his recruitment in December. He chose the Bears over the Sun Devils as well as offers from Southern Cal, UCLA, Ole Miss and Arizona.

I was incredibly excited.............until I saw the 2020 MLB draft thingy. Since he is going to sign with us, though, I'm gonna think positively and believe that Munoz, Fedora and Aranda all believe he's committed to giving college football and college baseball a try before heading off to the MLB.

Welcome to Baylor! Obviously a great athlete to be able to excel in two sports like that!!!

This is a potentially great get. The MLB thing is always a pause, but what makes this interesting is that more and more of the elite quarterbacks we are starting to see in college and the pro game, have a background. The guys that come off of the top of my head are Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahoney and Kyler Murray. Something about being able to throw off platform translates between the two sports. Off platform throwers of the ball is almost becoming a requirement to play qb at a high level. I'm interested to see what this offense is going to look like with Fedora and Munoz now. The other thing you ask yourself is what does this look like if asked to redshirt, which he will be. Does the MLB thing start to matter then.

If he were to pick between playing football and baseball at a professional level, the clear cut favorite would be football. Even though baseball players get paid a lot, those paychecks usually do not come until players are called up and working on their 2nd contract. Rookie contracts in baseball are worse than 1st round and even high second round NFL picks. That may play into his thinking. Question that needs to be asked is which sport is his first love. But getting to far ahead of myself. Great get. Impressed with the coaching staff and it's recruiting thus far. Let's keep it going!

Mahomes was in the exact same situation - worked out pretty well for him. Played both sports as Freshman, then focused on FB - glad to have BLAKE!

With the arbitration system, this isn't necessarily true. If you're a good player, you're going to get a nice signing bonus before starting your career, make generational wealth in Years 4-6 (Years 3-6 if you're a Super Two player) and get a fully guaranteed second contract you could only dream of in most other professional sports.

And no offense whatsoever intended toward Shapen, but there aren't many 6-foot quarterbacks in the NFL. If he's a high-round draft pick and really wants to play pro ball, baseball is probably his best bet.

With the above said, I do hope he ends up on campus and plays quarterback for us. If he wants to play both sports, that's really his only choice. And three years of college baseball wouldn't stunt his growth any as a future pro prospect.

On an unrelated note, is anyone else freaked out by how much he looks like Charlie Brewer in the pictures above? Dude could easily pass for Chuck's little brother.

I honestly thought they accidentally placed a picture of Brewer there. Lol.

Looks like he is projected as a SS or 3B. Also, PrepBaseball shows him as 6'1.

Blake Shapen, SS, Evangel HS, LA

Shapen, currently uncommitted, has an athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds. Also a standout quarterback, he has a quiet and simple approach at the plate with easy bat speed. He's an athletic defender with a quick first step, quality actions and a strong arm that produces throws with easy carry. He's an average runner, better underway, with instincts on the bases.

ProspectsLive.com:

Blake Shapen- Shapen was known as "the football guy" by a lot of scouts, and that's due to his commitment to Arizona State University to play quarterback as well as shortstop. He's very athletic and has good range and a strong arm and made a spinning play behind the second base bag. The swing is simple and powerful, and he utilizes a big leg kick for his timing mechanism. I hope someone takes him high enough in the draft to get him on the diamond full time.

Baseball America shows him at the #91 prospect. Its behind a paywall though. Assuming the same draft order, tht would put him in Rd 3 (assuming comp picks). 2019 3rd round runs to about 107 picks for the 30 teams

2019 signing bonus for that slot for Philly was $647,300. I dont follow baseball like I used, but thats a lot of bucks. Plus whatever the deal is too

Agree with some others, his height and weight are a little underwhelming.
Plus that gives us four QBs under scholarship.
Interested to see how that all plays out.

How does that work if he plays both sports. Is it a football scholarship or a baseball scholarship??

Shouldn't you always have 4 under scholarship in college football today given precedence that at least 1 backup will transfer out? That way you'll have a starter, a backup because almost every QB gets hurt and a guy redshirting even with the 4th guy transferring or converting positions.

And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, "To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours."

I think thats one of those formulas that assumes that is too clearcut. It makes sense but there are simply too many variables when it comes to 18-19 year old kids.

As a USC fan also, Shapen's decision was a no brainer both on the grid iron and the diamond.
