Bears fall 5-4 to No. 21 Dallas Baptist in Midweek Contest

WACO, Texas– The Bears dropped a midweek contest to visiting No. 21 Dallas Baptist, 5-4 on Wednesday night at Baylor Ballpark. 

The Bears (10-6) had their opportunities to bring runs home and outhit the Patriots (12-4), 9-6, but were unable to get the big hit to bring runners home, stranding five on the day. 

The Patriots jumped out to a 2-0 lead as the put up two runs in the top of the second inning on a home run by Jackson Glenn off Baylor starter Jimmy Winston. 

However, the Bears answered right back to take the lead with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on three hits, while taking advantage of one DBU error. After a leadoff single from Andy Thomas, Mack Mueller reached on a throwing error to give the Bears two base runners with nobody out. Davion Downey delivered an RBI double to bring home the first run of the inning. Kyle Devin then came through with an RBI ground out and Cade Currington singled back up the middle to put the Bears ahead, 3-2. The Bears left two on base however, as new DBU pitcher Ross Carver came in and got an inning ending double play. 

DBU tied the game back up in the third inning on a sac fly after a leadoff triple. 

With the game tied 3-3, the Patriots took the lead against BU reliever Jacob Ashkinos in the top of the fifth with a sac fly RBI and added another run in the top of the sixth on a solo homer by Ryan Wrobleski to make it 5-3, DBU. 

The Bears answered back with a solo homer of their own off the bat of Mack Mueller to make it 5-4, but a double play ended the inning. 

The Bears again had base runners in the seventh with a leadoff single from Jared McKenzie, but he was stranded and then again in the eighth with a one-out single by Mack Mueller, but a double play ended the inning. 

In the ninth, DBU closer Burl Calloway came in and shut things down with a 1-2-3 inning. 

Baylor reliever Jacob Ashkinos took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year, while DBU reliever Kyle Rich improved to 1-0 on the season. Calloway earned his fifth save of the year. 

A bright spot on the mound for the Bears was freshman Hambleton Oliver, who tossed a career-high 2.2 scoreless in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to give the Bears a chance at the comeback. 
 
NOTES

The loss is the first midweek loss to DBU under head coach Steve Rodriguez. Overall, he is 7-2 against the Patriots with the lone loss before tonight coming in a three-game series, March 25, 2016 at Dallas Baptist, 5-3. 

The Bears are now 53-27 all-time against the Patriots. 

The loss snapped a six-game winning streak against DBU. 

The Bears are now 37-14 in midweek contests under coach Rodriguez and 2-2 so far in 2020. 

FR DH Cade Currington made his first career start at Baylor Ballpark (second start in as many games) and went 1-for-3 with his first-career RBI (1). 

FR OF Jared McKenzie was 2-for-4 on the day and he now has a hit in 14-of-16 games on the year and multiple hits in 10 of those 16 games. 

SR OF Mack Mueller had his third multi-hit performance of 2020 as he was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and one RBI. 

SR OF Mack Mueller launched his team-leading fourth home run on the day. 

RS-JR RHP Jimmy Winston made his second start of the year and tossed 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on two hits with two walks and three Ks. 

RS JR RHP Jacob Ashkinos made his fourth appearance of the year, tossing 2.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts. 

FR RHP Hambleton Oliver tossed a season-high 2.2 innings, scattering one hit with one walk and one strikeout. 

JR LHP Tyler Thomas made his seventh appearance of the year, getting the final out of the top of the ninth inning. 

FR INF Kyle Nevin drove in one run on the day, his third RBI of the year. He finished the day 1-for-3 with one walk and one RBI. 

JR OF Davion Downey was 1-for-4, his one hit an RBI double.

"The big thing was we just didn't execute. We had opportunities. A guy on third base, nobody out and we can't get him in. That's a big one. Just pitching wise we got behind hitters. We kind of put them in offensive count. They put some really good swings on pitches that they should've hit. We've played well against this team. We always have. We just didn't execute today. That's the unfortunate part, but you know what there were some good things. I thought our guys executed early on to get a couple runs in."
