Baylor was always No. 1 for James Lynch

The one-time TCU and USC pledge, Round Rock (TX) High School defensive tackle James Lynch has always been extremely high on the Baylor football program. Matt Rhule and Baylor's new staff capitalized on that.

“The third time’s the charm,"  James Lynch said. Yes, it’s a cliche, and, yes, it’s true for Round Rock (TX) High School defensive tackle and one of Baylor's newest pledges.

On Wednesday, the 2017 talent committed to his third (and final) school, but it turns out that Baylor might have been his first and only had an offer been extended by the former regime.

“Baylor was the first school I saw and visited and really wanted to go to," the newly committed Lynch told SicEm365 on Thursday. "The atmosphere and the way everything felt there was like a home away from home.”

Despite camping at Baylor and turning heads at last year’s Dallas regional for the Nike Opening event, an offer never came for Lynch, and he eventually committed to in-state rival TCU. He later de-committed from the Horned Frogs and pledged to USC.

While James’ initial familiarity with Baylor football is based upon the product the Art Briles and his staff put on the field, Lynch has quickly become acquainted with Coach Rhule.

“I’ve been in contact with most of the coaches, but the coaches I’ve been in contact with a lot are Coach Rhule and Coach Bell," Lynch said.

In a time full of unknowns for Baylor, it seems that Rhule and company have managed to maintain that familial vibe that has underscored the program in recent years, as Lynch said the new staff “made it seem like a family and a new era at Baylor that I wanted to be a part of.”

In the weeks following his hire, Coach Matt Rhule has spoken about the physicality with which he expects his team to play, and this emphasis hasn’t gone unnoticed by Lynch. “I love the fact that we are going to be physical," Lynch said. "That is definitely something I want for the defense and just the team as a whole."

As for what Lynch brings to the table as a player, the coaching staff emphasized his athleticism and size combination as well as his consistent motor.

Outside of football, James intends to embrace the academic opportunities offered by Baylor and to make a positive impact on the community at large.

“I’m trying to do everything I possibly can for Baylor academically and also in football, and I really want to make an impact on the community in a positive way and show who I am.”

Now with under a month to go before National Signing Day, James knows the role that he can play in getting other recruits to jump on board at Baylor.

“I just started finding some guys who are interested in Baylor and, of course, I’m trying as much as I can to get people on board,” he said.

The weekend of Jan. 13, when he takes his official visit to Waco, will be a chance for Lynch to corral some new guys and also begin to build a relationship with his fellow commits.

“I don’t know everyone else that well, so I will definitely get in contact with them and talk about what we are going to do at Baylor.”

Good for him. Methinks we have turned a corner here and recruits will, once again, be excited by their prospects at Baylor. Here's hoping the coaches can get others to flip. Also, I hope some of the turncoats that exited Baylor's 2016 class come to regret their hasty and wrong decisions.
