Denzel Mims, the physical, clutch, record-breaking receiver who propelled Baylor to one of its best seasons in school history, is heading to the NFL, as the New Yorks Jets on Friday selected the All-Big 12 performer in the second round of the NFL Draft.

As the 59th overall pick, Mims went a tad lower than most draft pundits had predicted. Then again, the second round selection was considerably higher than the fifth or sixth round, which is where Mims was projected to go after his junior season in 2018.

Mims, though, shot up draft boards following a banner senior campaign in which he posted team-highs in receptions (66) and touchdowns (12). The 6-foot-3, 207-pound Mims finished with 1,020 receiving yards, marking the second time in his career he’d surpassed the 1,000-yard plateau.

Known for his eye-popping highlight-reel and timely receptions, the 2016 Daingerfield (TX) High School product ended his Baylor career ranked sixth all-time in receiving yards (2,925) and third in touchdowns (28).

After a successful senior season in which he improved his catch consistency dramatically to match his clutch nature, Mims participated in the Reese’s Senior Bowl and received rave reviews.

Mims was able to parlay the impressive Senior Bowl performance with an even more impressive effort at the NFL Combine, where he wowed scouts with a 4.38-second 40-yard dash, a 38.5-inch vertical, 131.0-inch broad jump and a 6.66 3-cone drill. All four of the marks were among the top 10 for receivers at the event, including three finishes inside the top four.

Mims joins Jalen Hurd (49ers, Rd. 3, Pick 67) as the second Baylor receiver in the last two years to be selected in the draft and the first Baylor receiver to be taken in the top two rounds of the draft since Corey Coleman was selected with the 15th overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2016.

Mims is Baylor’s 26th overall draft pick since 2011.
