Baylor defensive tackle Bravvion Roy was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the sixth round of the NFL draft Saturday afternoon.
Roy will see a familiar face when he reports for his first practice, as the Panthers are coached by former Baylor coach Matt Rhule, who no doubt had a big say in Carolina selecting Roy with the 184th overall pick.
The 6-foot-1, 330-pound Roy had a brilliant senior season, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors after posting career-highs in tackles (61), tackles for loss (13) and sacks (5.5). The Spring, Texas native is known as a better run-stopper than pass rusher.
Roy is the third Baylor player to be selected in the 2020 draft, following receiver Denzel Mims (New York Jets; second round) and James Lynch (Minnesota Vikings; fourth round).
Lance Zierlein, a draft analyst for NFL.com, had this to say about Roy: “Roy made a name for himself with his surprising athleticism and surge of activity and production. Contact balance and upper-body power are above average but short arms diminish consistency of effectiveness at the point of attack. Snap quickness and pad level could continue to create some disruptive opportunities as a pro. He needs to play in a scheme that puts him on the move to take advantage of his quickness and diminishes the need for hand-to-hand combat against NFL size. Roy has shown an ability to play the run and pass. His athletic traits could open the door to a back-end roster spot as a backup 4-3 nose.”
