Sources: Baylor to hire BYU OL coach Eric Mateos to same position

Baylor is set to hire BYU offensive line coach Eric Mateos to the same position, SicEm365 has learned. Mateos spent the 2019 and 2020 preseason with the Independent football program under the direction of new Baylor offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes. 

Along with Grimes, Mateos led a 2020 BYU offensive line that paved the way for one of the top offenses in the country by averaging 5.4 yards per carry with 24 rushing touchdowns  and allowing just 12 sacks on the season in 12 games. In his first season at BYU in 2019, BYU averaged 4.4 yards per carry with 25 rushing touchdowns while allowing 29 sacks. 

BYU left tackle Brady Christensen was named a First-Team All American by USA Today Sports, ESPN, CBS Sports/247Sports and Bleacher Report for his play in 2020 under Mateos. Christenen, a junior last fall, has declared for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Mateos has spent a total of three seasons coaching under Grimes including one season as the tight ends coach at LSU.

Prior to his stint at BYU, Mateos was hired as the offensive line coach at Texas State where he spent two seasons before being hired by Grimes at BYU for the 2019 season. At Texas State Mateos coaching an All-Sun Belt performer in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Mateos arrived at Texas State after a year at LSU as an offensive line graduate assistant role before being promoted in-season to be the tight ends coach for the Tigers in 2016. LSU tight ends combined for 27 catches for 420 yards and three touchdowns under his watch.

Mateos began his coaching career at Southwest Baptist in 2011 as an assistant offensive line coach before taking over as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for Hutchinson Community College in 2012. At Hutchinson, he tutored the top junior college offensive guard prospect in the country and the Blue Dragons broke 15 school records on offense

He then spent a season at HCC before taking a offensive line graduate assistant position at Arkansas where he coached from 2013-2015 under the direction of offensive line coach Sam Pittman, now the head coach at the University of Arkansas. The Razorbacks surrendered the fewest sacks in the SEC each of his three seasons and was the only school in the nation to have two 1,000-yard rushers in 2014. In 2015, Arkansas finished second in the SEC in scoring offense (40.2 points per game) and total offense (456.8 yards per game). When Pittman left for Georgia, Mateos served as an interim offensive line coach in the Liberty Bowl and the Razorbacks gained 569 yards on offense. 

As a player, Mateos played two seasons at Hutchinson Community College where he helped his team to the 2008 Region IV championship game. Mateos transferred to Southwest Baptist for his final years of eligibility and was the starting center for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
