Baylor drums Kansas State 107-59, Mitchell drops career high 31 points

WACO, Texas — The No. 2 Baylor men’s basketball team (15-0, 8-0) remains unscathed in Big 12 play with a 107-59 drubbing of conference bottom-dweller Kansas State (5-12, 1-8). 

Guys, what am I supposed to say about this? Obviously Baylor fans — and anyone with at least two bars of 3G who’s checked a basketball score since 2018 — saw a blowout coming from a mile away. That said, this? Seriously? I can’t remember a conference game so lopsided. 

Amongst the Bears bright spots shone Davion Mitchell who exploded for 31 points on the game off of a 7-9 shooting mark from deep — led by 22 points in the second-half points that stemmed from his starting 6-6 from deep. Jared Butler contributed 13, seven boards and five assists while MaCio Teague dropped a healthy 18 points along with six rebounds and five assists. 

Baylor rushed out to a 38-5 start, which is pretty good, I guess. In the first half alone, the Bears shot 20-36, forced 10 turnovers, scored 19 points off of those takeaways and won the rebound battle 25-13. Moreover, Butler led the first half with 13 points, six boards and five assists to go along with Teague’s 11 points and Mitchell’s nine. 

One could infer that the second half was much tamer and even keel, and one would be wrong. This game was 80-35 at one point. That score doesn’t even seem real. Kansas State had played 11 players at that point — none of which made a difference. 

In the end, Baylor outscored the Wildcats 53-33 in the second half to secure the 107-59 beat down, destroy the over/under and really destroy the spread. This is the second time in history that Baylor has scored 100 or more against the same opponent twice in the same season. The last time it happened? 1979 against TCU — my mom was three.
