Living a long life? Growing old gracefully? Eternity?

Eternity is too damn long for me. Just hope I can live a long, happy life. My Dad and my Stepdad both died at 78. Any years beyond that will be bonus time! Don't care if my body continues to wear out, - just want my mind to make the trip.

I'm starting to see this idea pop up. I'm sensing I might have to give up my 4 month fascination with bourbon. It's been fun.

Zone 2 cardio, diet and strong attention toward heart health.

1.) Use a weighted vest or set the incline as high as you can on a treadmill and walk for 45 minutes 4 times a week.

2.) Eat a high protein diet. Eat mostly whole foods.

3.) Take citrus bergamot, CoQ10/Ubiquinol, Cod Liver oil...maybe Nattokinase.

4.) Bonus points for lifting weights (8-12 rep range, full range of motion). 4 sets, 4 different workouts.

That's about as simple as its gonna get for longevity.

I am very interested in this topic and most of what I do health wise now is geared toward longevity. I do most of the items you note in your post but my supplements vary some from yours. I take creatine, methyl B, DHEA, Vit D3/K2. I also take a sleep stack supplement (I have trouble staying asleep) that includes mag glycinate, L taurine, apigenin, and inositol. I also try and get ~10 minutes of direct sunlight a day.

I would add that I don't think lifting weights is a 'bonus' but an absolute must and the earlier in life you start the better. It has so many benefits - physical, blood panel, cognitive, etc. I lift 4-6 times a week and try and do 2-3 fairly heavy days. Not body building type stuff but trying to be functionally fit.

I started doing intermittent fasting and cutting out most processed foods 2 years ago and it has been a game changer combined with the cardio/weightlifting. I do some blood panels beyond typical blood tests and my numbers have been great since I incorporated eating changes and supplements with physical effort.

My Cod Liver Oil story.

As a kid, if you were on Death's door and needed to stay home from school, my dad would offer us Cod Liver Oil.

Me? I'd rather go to school sick.

yep, and for some reason it is still so hard to do. What about stretching exercises? Getting an annual physical with blood tests?

Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England, was interviewed many years after the end of WWII. He was notorious for his excessive drinking and smoking. He lived well into his 90s.

A reporter asked him, "Sir, if a man wants to live to be a hundred years old, what should he do? "

Sir Winston pondered a bit and finally replied, "If a man wants to live to be a hundred, he should not drink, not smoke, and not chase wild women. If he refrains from these three things, he will live to be a hundred. But it will seem like 200."

Winston Churchill and I would have gotten along just fine.

After 40 years of working out, I tried the flexibility and balance exercises, kick my ass worse than any HIIT, Weight Training or body weight program I have traditionally done.

Look into cruciferous veggies. Will not help Test, but will suppress Estrogen. Easy thing to do for Test ratio.

The other thing I found, have to keep fat intake at a decent level as we age, over 50 talking. All our hormones are fat based. When go too low, it messes with Test. Butter, Fish Oil, Avocado oil, olive oil, eggs will help. Total Cholesterol may go above 200, but the ratios will still be good. At least been my experience

I could up my cruciferous veggies some. Didn't realize the testosterone/estrogen connection. Agree on the Fat - we almost exclusively cook with avocado or olive oil and I eat eggs all the time.

T NATION - The Community for Enhanced Fitness

This site is run by Biotest, a supplement company, but their articles are well sources (PubMed, Harvard, etc...). As long as you remember that they are a supplement company, the information is very good. Community is sort of like this one, some dicks, some good guys, some Alphas... The staff there is very responsive. I take what I can use, use some of their supplements and disregard the rest. Just giving fair warning... : )

I have lost over 100 lbss in the last 5 years. I now weigh the same amount as I played football as a Jr in high school. I feel great and though I still drink lots of beer on weekends I walk and swim daily. My father has a good live til around 84.
. I am trying for 85 but will check k out if I become uncomfortable and will thank God for the life I have had.

Sorry for any typos. Sitting at a table with a beautiful Thai woman

Good discussion, but I suppose I am far less concerned with how many years I live, than my quality of life.

It happens that I am celebrating the 20th anniversary of my cancer diagnosis, and a certain less-than-informed oncologist's pronouncement that I had six months to live.

I am very happy that he proved to be wrong, and that 'incurable' is not the same as 'untreatable'. I am able to walk a mile or more every day, to go where I want without hindrance, and appear healthy enough that most people would have no idea of my surgeries, experimental treatments, and various regimens.

I have my Lord, my wife, my life, and my family. And sometimes Baylor even wins a game I care about.

For this and more, I am very grateful.

Just came across this discussion in relation to LIQR in a pick up's passing.

The best shot at longevity is moderate exercise, and eating primarily a whole food plant based diet. It will reduce the risk of most cancers, and it will prevent type2 diabetes and atherosclerosis. You can avoid most if not all medications (statins, BP, and diabetes drugs) if you follow that type of diet.

You don't have a clue about what you are saying. Diet is the primary determinant of atherosclerosis. High cholesterol and saturated fat diets build plaque in your arteries. Statins lower your cholesterol. Generally speaking, you won't have a need for statins if you eat the right kind of foods, because you won't have high cholesterol. If you eat the standard American diet, statins might help you, but a majority of heart attack victims are already on statins.

About those statins.

"The USPSTF recommendations should be considered in the context of a meta-analysis, published in 2010,8 which included only trials that enrolled patients receiving high-risk primary prevention; this study showed no benefit on all-cause mortality with statins. The benefit for CVD mortality was not statistically significant (pooled relative risk, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.81-1.02). Notably, there was no significant statistical heterogeneity (I2 = 0) across the 12 trials (n = 75138) examined. The null result was robust in sensitivity analyses that excluded trials that stopped early, trials that included patients receiving secondary prevention, good-quality trials, trials with at least 3 years of follow-up, and trials with participants with a median baseline LDL lower than 160 mg/dL.6 The lack of benefit on CVD mortality found in the 2022 evidence review6 and the lack of benefit on all-cause mortality in the purely high-risk primary prevention meta-analysis8 call into question the reliability of the all-cause mortality benefit reported in the systematic review that accompanies the 2022 USPSTF recommendations. Because 19 of the 22 included trials were industry sponsored, potential bias in the randomization processes, as well as the potential for exaggeration of net benefits,9 are of greater concern than for trials whose sponsors were disinterested with regard to the outcomes."

LDL-C does not cause cardiovascular disease: a comprehensive review of the current literature

I'm going to go further than that. The USPSTF was a cost control measure disguised as "quality care". Many of its recommendations from statins to PSA testing are bad medicine and rely on bad science. If you have a doctor who is quoting USPSTF guidelines to you in 2026 instead of practicing Hippocratic medicine...find a new one.

In most people diet is a driver of CAD in that a high glycemic index diet combined with obesity will trigger metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and by extension CAD.

Possibly, but diet is the driver in CVD and Type 2 Diabetes. In many cases (high percentage), you can actually reverse atherosclerosis and Type 2 diabetes by changing diet.

My colonoscopy doctor told me my last visit that if you have not lost or gained weight in the past year, chances are less than 1 1/2 percent that you have cancer. Life is good.

Weight gain or loss is a good indicator. It's a factor of diet also. Cancer is problamatic, but some cancers if not all are influenced to a degree by diet also.
