If my family history is correct, then I should exceed 3/16th Native Amercan from both sides. I have the oral history which is confirmed by a distant cousin's family profile in a founding family of a county compilation from 50 years ago.

Now I don't expect my results to confirm that percentage. But if my results show zero percentage Native American and some African or Spanish, then I will suspect that my Northeast Alabama ancestor that fled Alabama for Arkansas in the 1830s was not half Cherokee cutting his hair and denying roots (Indians were forbidden by law to own land in Arkansas at that time). This is the family oral history. That he was probably a light skinned black or of Spanish heritage. I think this would be fascinating to discover. I just hope he wasn't French.

I am checking with a genealogy expert on this, but there may be a test to tell for sure assuming no extramarital relations or adoptions since. It won't confirm Cherokee, but if my limited knowledge is correct it will confirm Indian ancestry. Stay tuned until I have confirmation for you.

It will depend on the following though....was the half Cherokee's mother or father an Indian, and are you the son of a son of a son of the original Indian? (insert the appropriate number of generations... it just needs to go up the male side of your paternal line...basically following what most people's surname follows.

Don't know the first and know that there is one and only one Dame in that line. So that's a no go for me.
Then you are out of luck unless you have a cousin that goes through her brother (assuming the Indian was a male).

And had the scenario matched, the test would have worked per the expert.

I guess the validity is if the male from NE Alabama had a Cherokee father or a Cherokee mother. I could probably find a male cousin with the surname.

This blog explains it pretty well as far as your options.

Kind of a nutty question, but are all people receiving benefits as members of a Native American tribe required to produce confirmation of their DNA as ancestors?

If not, why ?

I live within 30 minutes of a couple of dozen tribes. From what the members tell me, it is determined by the old rolls around relocation and sometimes blood percentage. I went to church with a couple that had a 4th child oops. They did not have maternity coverage. The wife told me they were going to pay cash and negotiate the delivery fees down. I asked why since here husband was a card carrying Cherokee Nation member. Travel to the hospital in Tahlequah and have free medical for at least the child. She did that. The boy immediately received membership. His older sisters were not members, but it made their path easier.

Usually you have to prove lineage to specific roll members.

In short...no. Though dna alone is not sufficient to get benefits either.

For example, there are many descendants today of whites who were captured by and raised as Indians who are accepted as tribal members.

I don't intend for this to be racist. I hope no one takes it that way. It is merely for discussion.

Based on my initial dna tests, I have learned one of my mutations was spread around Europe by the Vikings. This likely means I have a female ancestor who was raped. I would imagine they must have also mistreated other members of my family (for obvious reasons).

A few days ago, a young African American tested with a European set of mutations, meaning his long ago male ancestor was not black. So, his ancestor may well have been raped as well by a slave owner. (Though there are other possibilities just as there are in my case).

Based on the young man's results, people came on and made an issue of it and apologized for the way his female ancestor was treated. I don't have issue with that. But not a single person apologized for the way my European female ancestor was treated or said anything about the horrible act that was done.

In my case it was somewhere between 1150 years ago and 950 years ago. In his case, it was 250 years ago or earlier.

My dna shows that I likely am the product of many invasions, enslavements, rapes, etc. I didn't mention the earlier ones. Just saying.

that was the rule of thumb for much of the past. tribes were wiped out or assimilated when they were conquered. "slaves" were part of the equation. Sometimes it was more for practicality as the alternative was to kill them off - with the thought that if they were left alive, they would come back for revenge someday. Women and very young children were prized for assimilation and propagation to keep the conquering tribe going

Everyone seems intent on proving their relation to royalty or making themselves a member of a disenfranchised group. To me, that just seems pointless. And maybe I'm just saying that because I'm POSITIVE my DNA goes nowhere. The opportunity to use this for pranks is simply too entertaining.

I may complete the test results, alter it and then try and convince my brother he has alien DNA.
Or just show up at someone's reunion event, where it's clear my Nordic looks would be a stretch.

This is as good a time as any to test the ignorant masses of their knowledge of science.

I am POSITIVE that I am related to rich royalty. I know for a fact because I got an email a couple of weeks ago telling me so;

My name is Becky J. Harding, I am a senior partner in the firm of Midland Consulting Limited: Private Investigators and Security Consultants. We are conducting a standard process investigation on behalf of HSBC, the International Banking Conglomerate and the descendants of King Leopold of Belgium.

This investigation involves those descendants and the circumstances surrounding investments made by this client at HSBC Republic, the Private Banking arm of HSBC. The HSBC Private Banking client died and nominated no successor in title over the investments made with the bank. The essence of this communication with you is to request you provide us information/comments on this succession

We had determined that you are indeed descended from King Leopold. However it is pertinent that you inform us ASAP whether or not you are familiar with this personality so that we may either start the process for a possible inheritance or put an end to this communication with you and our inquiries surrounding this personality.

You must appreciate that we are constrained from providing you with more detailed information at this point. Please respond to this mail as soon as possible to afford us the opportunity to close this investigation.

Thank you for accommodating our enquiry.

Well, I have not posted that I am interested in relations to royalty. I am not. I laugh at my wife's aunt's that claim they have traced history to Charlemagne. What a joke.

I am basically interested in some matches that clear up some family oral history. I don't expect to answer all my questions, but I have invested in the DNA test and will join the site for a few months so I can have database access. I expect to fill in the blanks back to the early 1800s or the late 1700s. I don't care about learning more about my European roots or traveling for discovery. I don't care about visiting Europe. Answer a few questions, then I will spend my free timedriving a few minutes away to the very beautiful trails, campsites, rivers, streams, and lakes of the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks. The present is perfectly fine for me. Was my greatuncle full of baloney.

When I first started just trying to get back beyond my great grandfather, I quickly learned I descend from Davy Crockett's first cousin which of course I immediately told a couple of relatives.

Their response?

One was related to Stephen F Austin, One Quanah Parker, and one Robert E Lee. (All true). I learned my lesson.

Edit: I should clarify that the relatives I told were a mix of relatives and their spouses at a 50th wedding anniversary party. So, the persons who descended from those named either weren't my blood relative or descended from a line not shared by me..

I haven't checked the math, but my niece is way into this stuff and says that she has gone through every begat and traced us back to England (we always thought Irish) and eventually on my mom's side to Stratford on Avon where both of W. Shakespeare's grandmother's share the same last name as my mom.... they were sisters whose children married fist cousins who then had Will... She swears she can trace an unbroken line from them to my mom 450 years later in Groesbeck, TX.

Didn't do a 'go fund me' page , but a similar name.

It's called 'go fu.. yourself'. I use it for important causes that contact me and demand money just because they are triggered.

Not surprisingly, there are trees out there.

I have a friend who had me look at her tree because several relatives trace back to Royalty. I followed her tree (not hers but someone's who intersected her royal lines). It went back to Joseph of Arimethea as well as Cleopatra.

Much of the more recent tree was verifiable. However, I think the source of some of the earlier lineages were historical genealogies commissioned by those royals in order to defend their royal claims.

DNA did help me find out for sure who my 4x great grandfather was, and that I do indeed descend from a couple of infamous lines.of which I otherwise would have no clue. It allowed me to discover that my family has been in America since the 1700's for sure and that I had relatives here in the 1600's. It has also told me that despite ancestry primarily in the British Isles, I am originally from Germanic sources.
