McLean has at least 3 hits: american pie, Vincent, castles in the sky and he's in the songwriters hall of fame. One hit wonder??

Good one!

Maybe a one album wonder. I own albums 2 and 3 and he definitely lost it somewhere in there.
Probably a true assessment. I still own his self-titled followup album to American Pie. There's nothing on it as good as American Pie or Vincent, but that's a pretty high bar for any album. I do like the album, though.

Thinking about it led me to go to YouTube to find one of the songs from "Don McLean" I always liked -- about a cowboy-turned-actor in era of the old Westerns. It's a beautifully crafted song, and it still has a lot to say about the power that movie studios and record labels have over artists.

Don't forget that Texas band Deep Blue Something and their big 1995 hit "Breakfast at Tiffany's".

I still have to defer to the KajaGooGoo submission, but these guys were pretty good but couldn't quite get things much further.

Another good one. So whatever happened to Don McLean?

Don McLean also did a cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying" that made it to #5 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1981. He played a show in Waco a few years ago at the Brazos River Stage by MCC - I missed it, though.

Big mistake. Huge!

In the Fall of 1981, I saw Maria Muldaur at Waco Hall. So you missed Midnight at the Oasis as well? You can't let these things slip away.

She was signed to Word music then. Perhaps you were intimidated by the headliner BJ Thomas.

500 Miles is a little too good for that to be a one hit wonder

They recorded the song in like 1979. No one listened to it then, but it became a favorite of one of the participants in the movie "Benny and Joon". It got included in the movie and became a hit, but by that time the band had long since broken up.

This is mostly wrong. The Proclaimers are twin brothers who are still making albums today. They played SXSW a few years back - here's the video:

The song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) was released in 1988 on their second album titled "Sunshine on Leith." They had an earlier hit in the UK titled "Letter from America." The song "Sunshine on Leith" has been adopted as the anthem for Hibernian FC, the twins' favorite football club and the one in the Leith portion of greater Edinburgh.

You are correct, though, that the song became a hit in the US 5 years after its initial release when it was used in the Benny and Joon soundtrack. Their song "I'm On My Way" was later used in Shrek.

They've never been a huge band, but The Proclaimers have a decently-sized following in the UK and especially in Scotland. The brothers have been avid supporters of Scottish independence, which helps explain part of their support in Scotland.

We have Max back for an Austin band. If we can get Shelby's Friend back to promote Head East, then we have a party.

I have always enjoyed this little ditty from Delaney & Bonnie (and friends). They may have had one other song hit the charts but they had some great friends .... played and toured with the best!

Well, there ya go!

Reminds me of EMF. When you saw an EMF concert, they'd perform "Unbelievable" like 3 times.

When I was a nerd taking physics in high school, I thought EMF would make a great band name.

From Japan to Mexico

I actually saw Wall of Voodoo live at a club show back in the early 80s. Their frontman, Stan Ridgeway, had a modest solo career after the band broke up.

One of my favorite lines in rock music is from Ridgeway: "All those people are lonely and mad
Now I got my foot on the gas
And as I'm crosing the Mid-West County line
I think about those mosquitos Pollacked on my windshield."

"Sunshine on Leith" is a great album. First time I ever came across the word "haver".
