Back when he was just seventeen, before he invented Ricky Nelson, the great James Burton invented this lick on a record he recorded with Dale Hawkins called "Oh, Susie Q".
Years later, an unknown band called Credence Clearwater Revival put out that same song. I was driving down the old Dallas-Fort Worth Turnpike when John C. Fogerty came screaming through my car radio singing Oh, Susie Q and playing that James Burton lick in a way I'd never heard it.
My life was never the same after that.
