Charlie Brewer earns high praise from two-time Heisman finalist

Without a single college game under his belt, former Lake Travis Charlie Brewer already has the Big 12’s attention. At least, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield thinks highly of his alma mater’s latest star prospect that broke the national record for completion percentage.

“That should speak for itself. I think what he was able to do in the years that he played there, obviously, I couldn’t do it,” the two-time Heisman finalist said. “His brother (Michael Brewer) couldn’t do it, and not even Garrett (Gilbert) who was one of the best high school football players ever, none of us could do what he did.”

Plenty of top-billed recruits have crashed and burned with higher praise but Mayfield’s appraisal coming from the same stomping grounds should hold water.

Brewer finished his senior season leading Lake Travis to the 6A Division I state title with a completion percentage of 75.2 percent, breaking a seven-year national record.

By comparison, Mayfield hit 63.2 percent his senior year in Austin. While Zach Smith and Anu Solomon hold more seniority over the early-enrollee, Brewer looks more and more like a signal caller that can drive the Bears down the field- Matt Rhule said that's the top priority.

He looked every bit his high school self during practice and capped off the spring with a team-leading two touchdown drives (including a strike to Ish Wainright).

Ftblbob5 or another observer have any thoughts on Brewer's fall camp, so far? I noticed Rhule mentioned him in a posted video interview. Eyewitnesses?

I'd also love to hear from some eye witnesses on this front! It was interesting that Rhule mentioned Brewer and Smith in his last interview, seemingly very impressed with Brewer, but didn't mention Soloman at all. Of course it's way too early and I'm obviously trying to read way too far into all this but... isn't that why we're here?

Brewer looked miles better than Smith or Anu.
