7 - “Or” Situations

There are three situations regarding backup slots including the quarterback situation where each QB can be the 1, 2, or 3. The most notable situation is in the trenches with both defensive tackle spots up for grabs.

Ira Lewis is in a battle with Bravvion Roy at nose tackle while Michael Johnson has Tyrone Hunt on his tail. K.J. Smith and Brian Nance have the end spots wrapped up, though, giving some sense of security.

3 - True freshmen on the 2nd team offensive line

The experience among the starters is great even if Mo Porter hasn’t started a game. Rhule keeps joking about how thin of a position group it is though, saying no one’s allowed to get hurt there.

As things stand today, Ryan Miller (C), Xavier Newman (RG), and Henry Klinge III (RT) all will forgo a redshirt season to get the depth to the place it is now that Tanner Thrift and Josh Pelzel retired.

“I think on our first team offensive line we have four young men that have played a ton.  Pat Lawrence, Blake Blackmar, and Ish Wilson are all returning starters. At left tackle we have Maurice Porter, who I think as a senior hasn't started a game. He's an NFL player to me […] I don't know if we'll be a smash-mouth team. I hope that myself and our staff is smart enough to kind of play to the talent that we have.” -- Rhule

2 - Positions Chris Platt is listed at

The two-sport star is billed as the top receiver but also has his named inked as a backup cornerback. Considering the relatively thin depth in the secondary, getting someone with Platt’s track speed shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

Last year under Jim Grobe, Davion Hall made full-time move to safety and is now listed as the starter while Grayland Arnold and Verkedric Vaughns are battling for a CB spot. In a breakout interview, Rhule said he believes Platt is an NFL cornerback worth drafting in the second or third round per Cox Media Group's Shehan Jeyarajah.

"At Temple we played some kids both ways. We're going to play Chris Platt, he's -- I don't know if there's another kid in college football, he's a two-sport player, track and football, and he's going to play both ways." -- Rhule

1 - Running back bolded

One surprise is there’s neither an “or” situation at running back and the listed starter isn’t the expected name. JaMycal Hasty is bolded as the name. Terence Williams is the No. 2 right now. Don’t read too much into that formatting though.

It’s likely Williams is down in the depth chart because of his injury whereas Hasty impressed throughout practice. The two have greatly different styles of play and should still be expected to split carries without one being the true starter.
