Other players that didn't practice on Wednesday included WR Jalen Tolbert (who was rehabbing on the sideline, but no report was found on what he was working through), WR Michael Gallup (who's still recovering from his ACL injury), RB Rico Dowdle (hip), RB JaQuan Hardy, LB Jabril Cox (ACL recovery), LB Damone Clark, C Alec Lindstrom, DT Carlos Watkins, and DT Osa Odighizuwa (quad contusion).

Although we still sit two months away from Training Camp and over 100 days till the season opener, it should be interesting to see how the Cowboys manage these injuries, but it's not time to push the panic button.

On Saturday, Jones spoke at an event promoting a soccer match at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, compared him to arguably one of the best offensive lineman in NFL history, Larry Allen.

The Cowboys owner did not directly compare Allen and Smith as players, saying "

"Not as a player, I'm not saying that," Jones said of invoking Allen. "But he is strong. We are pleased." He referenced how strong Smith is, which was something noted by draft scouts. The Tulsa product is 6'5", 324 pounds and does a great job with his hands at the point of contact. That was something Larry Allen was particularly good at.

THe Landry Hat

Who might lose their job (McGovern to Tyler SMith is a given)

Carlos Watkins

Watkins started 14 games for the Cowboys last campaign, but he only played 43 percent of the snaps given the emergence of rookie Osa Odighizuwa and Neville Gallimore, who returned from injury for the final five games of the year.

It's unclear how the defensive tackle rotation will shake out this offseason, but Watkins' starting job is no longer secure following the selection of Arkansas space-eater John Ridgeway in the fifth round. While Ridgeway could lose snaps on passing downs, the 6-foot-5, 321-pound behemoth is a prototypical nose tackle who could force his way into the starting lineup given how disruptive he is against the run.

Simply put, the former Razorback is a bully who refuses to give up ground in the trenches and will force opposing ball-carriers to bounce outside … where the likes of Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Dante Fowler and Jayron Kearse, when he's lined up in the box, will be waiting to pounce.

This isn't to say Watkins will completely lose his spot in the rotation, but the upside Ridgeway offers as a run defender might be too intriguing to pass up for Dan Quinn after Dallas allowed 112.8 rushing yards per game in 2021.

Noah Brown/James Washington

Brown soared up the Cowboys' WR pecking order after Amari Cooper got traded. With Michael Gallup recovering from a torn ACL and a long shot to be cleared for training camp, Brown was No. 2 on the depth chart for multiple weeks. Then, Dallas signed James Washington in free agency, which likely demoted Brown to his familiar slot role as the third receiver behind Lamb and Washington.

Following the selection of South Alabama star Jalen Tolbert in the third round, however, Brown and Washington are now in jeopardy of losing their starting jobs. While the WR3 role is (temporarily) up for grabs while Gallup works his way back, Brown and Washington will be WR4 and 5 when Dallas is back to full strength.

The general consensus is Tolbert will have the biggest role of the Cowboys' rookie class, including Smith and second-rounder Sam Williams, who faces an uphill climb to earn snaps given the team's assortment of edge rushers.

Tolbert already impressed the coaching staff at rookie camp and he could very well open his rookie campaign as Dak Prescott's No. 3 target behind CeeDee Lamb and Dalton Schultz if everything goes according to plan. Even if Gallup is back, Tolbert should be ahead of Washington and Brown on the depth chart.

I think Noah Brown is safe as a big blocking WR/lite TE who can also catch.

He is also our H Back. I agree with you depending on what they do with Nall. Nall also excels on Special Teams. He's more of a RB/FB/ST but could play HBack if Brown gets cut. Tough guy. KNocked Sewo Olunai off the roster

The Dallas Cowboys have once again made a splash after the draft, taking in the top undrafted free agency class in 2022, according to NBC Sports Edge. This isn't uncommon for Dallas, as they have been one of the best teams in the league in signing these players, thanks to their ability to find roles for said players and get them on the field relatively quickly, compared to other teams.

One player, in particular, has been turning heads since his arrival and through the early part of practices: defensive back Isaac Taylor-Stuart out of USC.

Coming in at 6-1 and 201 pounds, Taylor-Stuart looks the part of a player who should be ready to come in and help this team on special teams and possibly work his way into the defensive secondary rotation in time. His length and physical play at the line of scrimmage are clearly coveted by this Cowboys defensive staff, and so far he's shown that he's going to be a player that could be hard to cut if his impressive start continues.

That impressive start is thanks to his willingness and ability to play cornerback and safety in this defense, something the Cowboys coaching staff has been doing with him early on in rookie camp practices.

the Spun;

Dallas Cowboys rookie Tyler Smith will get a special jersey number.

The Cowboys have given No. 73 to their first round NFL Draft pick. The No. 73 was worn by franchise great Larry Allen, one of the most-dominant NFL offensive linemen of all time.

Smith is too young to have watched Allen play, but he's very familiar with his legacy.

"I'm a younger guy, so Larry Allen is before my time, but I caught on (to how good Allen was)," Smith said per Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "Larry Allen wore that number, and I've seen a lot of the adversity he went through early in his life, and I feel like I resonate with a lot of that. It means a lot to be able to wear that and carry on that legacy."

The Cowboys have very high hopes for Smith, who was drafted in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

If he can be even half as good as Allen was, the Cowboys will be in great shape.

'Eat a couple cows': Rookie DT John Ridgeway to beef up after heat, speed of early practices

It's been quite a month for John Ridgeway.

The defensive tackle woke up as a Dallas Cowboy for the first time the morning of May 1, having been drafted by the team in the fifth round just the day before. On May 7, he celebrated his 23rd birthday. On May 13, he signed his rookie contract with the organization and attended his first day of minicamp. May 24, his first day meeting the Cowboys veterans at Day One of OTAs.

And while there's no word on how Ridgeway spent his Memorial Day weekend to close out the month, there's a good chance he was following the example of so many others and hitting a holiday barbecue. Or two.

Mother Nature wasted no time in welcoming the Illinois native to his new North Texas home,

And while Ridgeway likely experienced a few southern scorchers during his time at Arkansas, the conditions proved to be a whole different animal when combined with the torrid pace of an NFL practice.

"I'd definitely say the speed," Ridgeway answered when he was asked recently about the biggest adjustment from college, "because the NFL is go, go, go, go. In college, you can take a couple of plays and catch your breath. But you're going against All-Pros everyday. So you can't take any reps off at all."

By Day Two, head coach Mike McCarthy and the staff elected to dial things down slightly, thanks in part to the mercury having climbed even higher.

The massive player nicknamed "The Vanilla Gorilla," who stands 6-foot-6-inches and weighed in at 328 with the Razorbacks, admitted that the Dallas heat and humidity- not to mention battling with enormous rookie offensive lineman Tyler Smith- had already affected him physically.

"I'm about 320 [pounds] right now, 318," he told reporters before adding with a laugh, "I'm sure it dropped today."

As with so many other things about his life right now, though, that will evolve in the days, weeks, and months to come.

"I haven't talked to the strength and condition staff, but I'm sure they'll probably cut me down a couple pounds and build me back up."

Which leads us to what will undoubtedly be one of the more enjoyable parts of the big man's rookie summer.

John Ridgeway doesn't know exactly how he'll be used in a defensive tackle rotation that also includes Osa Odighizuwa, Neville Gallimore, Quinton Bohanna, and Trysten Hill. He doesn't know yet if he'll be asked to line up in 3-technique, as a nose tackle, or a two-tech.

But he has a pretty good idea of how he'll pack on any pounds that happen to melt away during Cowboys practices in the sweltering Texas heat.

"There's probably some cows in Texas?" he asked with a grin. "You got hogs or something here? Probably eat a couple cows a week or something."

Here's hoping Ridgeway found himself a brisket or two at a Memorial Day cookout as OTA work resumes for the team on Tuesday.

Second-year defensive lineman Chauncey Golston worked at defensive tackle. This isn't a full-time position change from defensive end. The plan is for Golston to play DE on first and second downs and then move inside on third downs. The Cowboys were working in a lot of passing situations on Wednesday.

This summer will mark a first for Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy.

He'll coach a team that will hold three joint practices with two teams in short succession. First, the Cowboys will practice in Colorado at the Denver Broncos' facility on Aug. 11, two days before their preseason meeting. Then, the Cowboys will work at the Los Angeles Chargers' facility on Aug. 17 and 18 before an Aug. 20 exhibition.

McCarthy hopes the arrangement will minimize his starters' exposure to injury in the preseason. Top players can find the quality reps they need on the practice field and rest up for the Sept. 11 opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber found dead in Frisco apartment

Police said officers were asked to perform a welfare check Wednesday.

Marion Barber III, a punishing staple in the Dallas Cowboys backfield for six seasons, was found dead Wednesday at his Frisco home.

Frisco police said officers were asked to perform a welfare check at an apartment believed to be leased by Barber and that there was an "unattended death" at the location.
