If DE De Willams works out, he'll have the opposite side pressure he needs. LB, we will have to see who steps up, Jabril Cox is back unless they go Gfford. LVE has some proven potential IFF he is healthy

We still have Team Cap Space: $15,359,411 over the cap. We should be able to pu one hell of a FA or two good ones

How about Javedon Clowney or Melvin Ingram, both should come in cheap on 1 year or 1 year plus option deals

CBS Sports thinks more of our draft than some fans:

Dallas Cowboys: B+

Best Pick: Second-round pass rusher Sam Williams is an impressive edge rusher. Were it not for character concerns, he would have been a higher pick. He fits a major need.

Worst Pick: Fourth-round tight end Jake Ferguson probably went a little high for his skill set. They do have a need there, so it makes sense to take a chance, but there were better options.

The Skinny: I like what the Cowboys did. I was higher on first-round pick Tyler Smith, the offensive lineman from Tulsa, than most. He will be a good player, likely at guard to start. I also liked Williams and third-round receiver Jalen Tolbert.

From The Draft Network:
Quote:

In his one year at Arkansas, Ridgeway was able to make an impression and took on some of the best offensive lines the SEC has to offer. The Razorbacks played a grueling schedule which was a good test for the FCS transfer, playing programs like Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Auburn, and Penn State. Ridgeway passed the test. Ridgeway served as the anchor for the Razorback defense and was consistently able to take on double teams and be a disruptive force in the middle of the defense. Ridgeway has natural strength and heavy hands that, when he shoots his hands, can knock back the offensive lineman and literally press their upper body backward. Ridgeway plays in a low stance where he is able to play with good leverage, which makes him a difficult player to move even with double teams. On the next level in the right scheme, Ridgeway can be an immediate starter and can become an instant run-stopping interior defensive lineman

Tulsa HC Talks Penalties, Portal & More On T. Smith
May 02, 2022 at 02:00 PM

FRISCO, Texas Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery is biased, and doesn't try to hide it.

Watching one of his best players from last season get drafted in the first round by the Cowboys was a great moment for him personally, along with the school, which produced its first first-round pick in 37 years.

So when the narrative on Tyler Smith pivots from being drafted in the first round to the excessive holding penalties he endured last year, Montgomery is quick to defend his player. In fact, the head coach said Smith's brute strength is what leads to many of those penalties.

"Nah, I think he'll be fine in that regard," Montgomery said of the penalties. "I will say this, and I'm a little biased so I'm going to throw this part in there ... Tyler plays so physical that at times, he got some penalties called against him that weren't penalties. (The refs) saw somebody on the ground and they were like, "well, something must have happened so I just threw a flag there.' He was that dominant and that physical of a guy."

Montgomery leads a Tulsa offense that is one of the fastest-paced teams in the country. He pointed out that while most guards in this draft average anywhere from 700-750 snaps in a season, Smith played 915, suggested that more reps will lead to a higher number of penalties.

But Montgomery did admit that Smith had some technique issues earlier in his career, that led to a few more holding calls. But he's adamant that if Smith sticks to his technique and relies on his strength, he can be a dominant player.

"His hands got wide (at times) ... once he gets his hands back inside and corrects some of those technical things, he can be a beast," Montgomery said. "Once he gets a hold of you, you're not going anywhere. He can be out of position, he is so damn strong that he can pull himself and you back into a position where he's back where he's needs to be."

Montgomery also talked about his conversations with Smith, who was debating whether to return to Tulsa or enter the draft. He also had some options to enter the transfer portal and go to other schools, including a few that are regularly contending for national championships.

"Yeah there were teams out there contacting him that were trying to get him to jump away from us," Montgomery said. "He and I visited about that, it came down to he was either going to come back and play or take his shot in the league. I'll be honest, I was telling him to come back to school because I was telling him that he would be the No. 1 tackle taken in next year's draft. I truly believe that. Clean up some of the technical stuff and I think that's what he would do. But it went down to the wire."

Obviously, we know the decision Smith made. And now, he joins the Cowboys, perhaps as the starting left guard, but with a chance to eventually get back to tackle.

"I think, starting him off inside, getting some experience in there, it'll give them some immediate help," He said. "He's so strong so athletic, when he locks on people, it's done. But I think it gives him an opportunity to mature a little bit more. I think he'll slide out there to tackle and be one of the best there is."

My take on our positions:

CB - If Kelvin Joseph avoids the hangmans noose. I think we are okay at CB. Jordan Lewis is a nice backup as is Goodwin. If Joseph is out, we got a CB issue.

Edge - DE De Williams needs to come through immediately. We have good DEs but pass rush outside of DLaw is a little suspect

LG. Our draftee Smith has to come through. I think from what his college coach say, he could be a real badass at LG. Needs a little time for OT but still could go there if needed

LB. LVE is good but not superb after his surgeries. Cox has got to step up until our draftee recovers from his surgery

K - we are good with the new kid

RB - we are good with Zeke and Pollard and Dwoddle/Hardy mopping up. Would love to see Pollard in more of an HBack role so he could get his hands on the ball

S - possibly our biggest hole. Time to spend some FA money

OT - Excited to see what Josh Ball and Waletzco can do. Loved Balls potential last year and Waletzco has the skills to take over RT

TE - Schultz is a rare bird. Lets hope Jake Furgeson is worth the draft pick. At least hes a blocker

WR - my most comfortable position. Gallup, Lamb, Washington and adding a badass Rookie in Tolbert

How many teams have two CB1? They don't. Brown would be ideal as a slot guy but if Joseph gets suspended then Brown can fill in.

Mel didnt particularly like our class but then again he sticks to his numbered board:

Dallas Cowboys: C+
Top needs: WR, OL, DL
The Cowboys have picked three offensive linemen in the first round in the past 40 drafts, and all three made at least one first-team All-Pro. They built some really good offenses around Tyron Smith (2011), Travis Frederick (2013) and Zack Martin (2014), and Smith and Martin are still there, playing at a high level (when healthy). This line is getting old, though, and with La'el Collins released in the offseason, it needed a talent infusion.
Enter Tyler Smith, a raw but nasty left tackle with intriguing traits and a 6-foot-5, 324-pound frame. Smith needs a lot of work on his technique, but you can see on tape why he went in Round 1. Could he start at left guard in Year 1 and move to either tackle spots in future years? That might be the best bet to get him on the field. Plus, with the way the wide receiver board fell -- six went before Dallas' pick at No. 24 -- the front office likely didn't have any Round 1 wideout grades left.
After that, though, the Sam Williams (56) pick left me scratching my head. All he does is rush the passer. He isn't good against the run. I would have taken him on Day 3. Jalen Tolbert (89) fills a need at wide receiver, but the more I think about it, the more I see some redundancy in what Michael Gallup already brings this offense. Jake Ferguson (129) is just a backup tight end based on what I saw on tape. He went too high. Linebacker Damone Clark (176) might turn into a good player, but he recently had spinal fusion surgery, so it's really tough to use a fifth-round pick on an unknown injury.
I think that's it; this class just has too many unknowns. We don't know if Smith can definitely be a good guard or that Williams can definitely be an every-down player. Tolbert has good hands but is still raw. This is a risky group.

I've never understood why they make such a big deal about hand size.
Winning by cheating is just as impressive as winning fairly, probably even more so. Your opponent was better than you in every way, and you beat them with your brain.

Depends on the position. Really important for WR and QB and anyone that handles the ball as the ball sits in their hands easier. On D it means you can grab the pads easier but just as imporant on D is the strength of your hands. If you hear someone has a vise like grip, thats a good thing

This is wild, never heard of this happening for a mid round draft piick. Daks got some pull in the draft room! Courtesy Cowboy Wire

Quote:

"I got a phone call from Dak a couple days ago," Tolbert told The Draft Show shortly after hearing his name called. "We talked on the phone for about twenty minutes and just talked about ball and relationship with quarterbacks and what I could bring to the table."

New wideouts coach Robert Prince called Tolbert "the right type of guy, a guy we're going to have to kick out of the building. That's how hard he's going to want to work."

Work started at that very first session with Prince.

"The workout was a great workout, and we both enjoyed it," Tolbert told reporters via conference call over the weekend. "I showed that I can retain information and be able to run routes in the system of the Cowboys. After, I remember asking Coach, 'Hey Coach, what can I work on?' and he was like, 'I'll tell you that when we make you a Cowboy,' so I kind of got a little heads- up there."

The Cowboys got such a good feeling that Prescott reached out to him personally leading up to the draft. That phone call not only helped sell Prescott on the small-school prospect, it also went a long way in convincing the Cowboys front office that they were zeroing in on someone who would mesh well with the playmakers already in their locker room.

"For me, that was a Dak thing," said vice president of player personnel Will McClay in the team's Day 2 press conference. "It's the importance of him to the organization. He reached out, and we said, 'Hey, here's some guys for you to do your thing with.' Because we're 50-plus years old here, and we have an impression and a feeling about him, and the guys that are in the locker room also pick up tendencies and things. It was important for a great person like him to reach out to these guys and give us some feedback."

Prescott was the only quarterback Tolbert says he heard from, as it's not a common practice.

"I actually thought it was a call, like, 'Hey, is this your draft pick number?'" Tolbert shared with media members. "I answered, and he was like, 'Jalen!' and I was like, 'What's up?' and he was like, 'It's Dak Prescott, man. How are you doing?' For a minute, it was a surreal moment, because I never knew quarterbacks would call prospects, but it was awesome."

"He told me to hit him up if I needed anything," the Mobile native said Friday. "I'm definitely calling him tonight and letting him know that I'm ready to get all the plays. I need the playbook."

he Cowboys' nine new draft picks, their 20 UDFAs, and soon, the rest of the fellas, are ready to show up to work.
The Cowboys 2022 rookie minicamp is scheduled to take place May 13 through 15. There can be a "rookie football development program'' after that, but even more key: OTAs.

The Cowboys OTAs- will take place May 24-25, June 1-2, June 6-7 and June 9-10. Then comes mandatory minicamp for veterans, June 14-16 ... and by late July, we'll be in Oxnard for training camp.

The newest member of this group is another linebacker in LSU's Damone Clark. Clark is actually known to have incredible character off-field. And, instead of a knee injury, the LSU Tiger is currently recovering from spinal fusion surgery for a herniated disc that had him tumbling down the draft boards after his impressive NFL Combine performance.
-----

is it a herniation or spinal fusion? Is it in his back or his neck? lots of more info needed here. Hereneation is nothing compared to spinal fusion. The neck is much harder to come back from than the back
