We have so many more important needs elsewhere, we have some talent at TE, I would rather tradeback and pick up some later and maybe future picks than go there

McCarthy out. Who should they interview?

Why would they not allow him to interview with the Chicago Bears and then fire him?

They didn't fire him, his contract expires tomorrow. Basically they tried to squeeze him with the exclusive period but he wisely just waited them out knowing he had options.

Jerrah will probably hire Kellen Moore. In a Groundhogs Day type move, we'll be having the same conversation 2 years from now. Jerrah sucks.

That's my bet. Sadly, there are some good up-and-comers he will not interview. (Klingsberry and Flores should get another shot).

Candidates from Sporting News

Ben Johnson
  • Team: Detroit Lions
  • Position: Offensive coordinator
Johnson has become arguably the most well-known NFL coordinator to not yet take the leap into a head coaching role. He joined the Lions as an offensive quality control coach in 2019 but quickly climbed the ranks before becoming Detroit's offensive coordinator in 2022.
Under head coach Dan Campbell, Johnson's offense has become one of the league's best. He's helped quarterback Jared Goff find a career resurgence with reliable weapons like WR Amon-Ra St. Brown and TE Sam LaPorta and also built a dominant run game between a strong offensive line and a dynamic running back duo in Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.
Because of the Lions' offensive success en route to some playoff appearances, Johnson was considered a high-ranking candidate in the Commanders' and Seahawks' head coach searches in 2024, but he instead returned to Detroit for another season.

Johnson, who would bring an offensive background to Dallas, would likely be an expensive hire with how desired he's been as a candidate. But with some strong offensive weapons already in place like Prescott and Lamb, Johnson could help the Cowboys become a dominant offensive team once again.

Aaron Glenn
  • Team: Detroit Lions
  • Position: Defensive coordinator
Detroit's other coordinator, Glenn, is getting just as many head coaching looks as his counterpart, and for similar reasons. The Lions' defense, which just held a strong Vikings squad to just nine points in Week 18, finished the regular season seventh in points per game allowed (20.1) despite dealing with a lot of injuries.
Like Johnson, Glenn doesn't have prior head coaching experience, but he's also coached under some of the game's best, like Campbell and Sean Payton. If Jones is willing to overlook a lack of prior head coaching experience, either Lions coordinator would be a strong choice.
Considering Dallas ranked 28th in the NFL with 355.2 yards allowed per game this season, a defensive-minded head coach wouldn't be a bad idea. Glenn, 52 years old, will likely get his shot in a top role at some point, and he could be a strong fit to lead a team that boasts pieces like Parsons, DaRon Bland and Trevon Diggs.

Kellen Moore
  • Team: Philadelphia Eagles
  • Position: Offensive coordinator
Moore isn't considered one of the premier head coaching candidates of this cycle, but he could be an intriguing name for Dallas specifically. Jones may value the connection his potential candidate has to the Cowboys, and Moore certainly has prior experience in Dallas.

Moore was a backup quarterback for the Cowboys from 2015-2017. The left-handed passer started in three games for Dallas at the end of the 2015 regular season, throwing for 435 yards in the team's final matchup against Washington. After retiring from playing football in 2018, Moore became Dallas' new quarterbacks coach, and he was later promoted to offensive coordinator in 2019.
After the Cowboys fell out of the playoffs in January 2023, Moore parted ways with the franchise. He spent the 2023 season as the Chargers' offensive coordinator before becoming the Eagles' offensive coordinator this season.
With his roots in Dallas, Moore could be an interesting candidate for the Cowboys. He's found offensive success in both Los Angeles and Philadelphia; considering Moore just spent the 2024 season leading Saquon Barkley to 2,000-plus rushing yards, he could be a great offensive leader for Dallas if it chooses to draft Heisman runner-up Ashton Jeanty, who is coming out of Moore's alma mater, Boise State.

Kliff Kingsbury
  • Team: Washington Commanders
  • Position: Offensive coordinator
Another offensive mind that Dallas could take a look at is Kingsbury, who does have prior NFL head coaching experience. Although the Cardinals didn't find much success as a franchise during his tenure (28-37-1), Kingsbury has been considered a quarterback whisperer throughout his career.

Prescott isn't much of a dual-threat, but Kingsbury has led strong offenses led by Kyler Murray and Jayden Daniels to success. This season, Washington finished third in rushing yards per game (154.1) and fifth in points per game (28.5).
If Jones is willing to give him another shot at head coaching, Kingsbury would bring experience and a proven offensive success to Dallas. Plus, the Cowboys would be poaching a strong coach away from one of their division rivals in the process.

Joe Brady
  • Team: Buffalo Bills
  • Position: Offensive coordinator
Brady, who was considered one of the best assistant coaches in college football when leading Joe Burrow at LSU, took over as the interim offensive coordinator in Buffalo in November 2023. The Bills' offense has been among the league's best since then, with Brady implementing more of a run game in Buffalo while maintaining the dominant passing game led by Josh Allen.
Even when the franchise parted ways with his No. 1 receiver, Stefon Diggs, Allen has remained one of the game's top quarterbacks as Buffalo went 13-4 this season. Brady has had the Bills' offense running like a well-oiled machine for two seasons now, and he could potentially do the same for Prescott and the Cowboys' offense if given the opportunity.

Brady is another proven offensive mind that's awaiting his first chance at head coaching. If Jones and the Cowboys have a vision to turn their offense into something similar to what the Bills have built, Brady could be a candidate to replace McCarthy.

Brian Flores
  • Team: Vikings
  • Position: Defensive coordinator
Flores joins Kingsbury as the two candidates with prior NFL head coaching experience on this list, but Flores comes from a defensive background. He spent three seasons (2019-2021) leading the Dolphins, becoming the first coach in nearly 20 years to lead the franchise to consecutive winning seasons.
Flores sued the NFL in 2022 over alleged racism in hiring practices, and there were also allegations surrounding Flores' negative treatment of Tua Tagovailoa when he was in Miami. Both aspects could influence his head coaching candidacy.
Since he joined the Vikings in 2023 though, Minnesota's defense has excelled. The Vikings just finished the regular season fifth in sacks (49), and first in interceptions (24). With experience at the helm of a large-market franchise and a track record of strong defenses, Flores could be a fit to replace McCarthy.

The more I think about it, the more I realize how much easier it was to go into the off season knowing that we could plan for the future, rather than get knocked out in the first round again. After three 12 win seasons, we should have had more to show for it

I think a big part of Deion's success at the collegiate level is his name. He can draw talent based on his name alone. I don't think that translates to the NFL.

If I accepted HC here, I would want full control of all Football Operations. Let me pick the draft and the FAs. Let Jerry do the GM part solely with contracts, etc based on conversations with me. No more overpaying players like Dak. That was a ridiculous contract at the worst time

Sanders and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones go way back, and there were multiple reports including from ESPN and NFL Media on Monday night that Jones and Sanders have talked about the Cowboys' vacant head coaching job. Jones is looking for a new coach after he and Mike McCarthy parted ways as McCarthy's contract expired.

They are leveraging each other, Deion for leverage on Colorado and recruiting cred, and Jerry for clicks and ink.
