Breaking down the 2019 offers: Tight Ends

In Matt Rhule’s offense, the tight end position is expected to be a point of major focus going forward. The current Baylor roster features four scholarship tight ends, with three of those expected to leave the program after the 2017 season, leaving just 2017 signee Tyler Henderson on campus. With the three tight ends currently committed to Baylor in the 2018 recruiting class, Baylor will be back at the four-scholarship mark by this time next year.

What is unclear is how much of an emphasis will Rhule and company will place on the position in the 2019 class. So far, the Baylor staff has extended offers to four tight ends in the 2019 recruiting cycle.

Baylor’s first offer at tight end for the 2019 class was a big one. Austin Stogner, a 6-foot-6, 230-pound prospect out of Plano’s Prestonwood Christian Academy, is a Baylor legacy and Rhule jumped on him in early February. Baylor was Stogner’s very first Power 5 offer, and he has gone on to pick up twenty-four more in the ensuing months.

Despite his familial ties to Baylor, Stogner never seemed very receptive to Baylor. On June 23rd, he committed to Oklahoma.

Baylor extended its second 2019 tight end offer three months after its first. In early May, Dickinson High School’s Jalen Wydermyer reported his Baylor offer. Wydermyer, a dual-sport athlete who plays AAU basketball, is a 6-foot-4, 210-pound prospect who also holds an offer from Houston.

In June, Baylor offered Thomas Gordon, a 6-foot-4, 218-pound tight end out of Strake Jesuit. While Duke was Gordon’s first Power 5 offer, Baylor was the first Big 12 program to extend an offer and, as of August, those two are still his only Power 5 offers.

Gordon visited Baylor in the Spring for Junior Day. He has also visited Texas, Northwestern, Stanford, and Georgia in recent months. He holds additional offers from Tulane, SMU, Houston, and Tulsa.

Baylor’s fourth and final (so far) offer at the tight end position for the 2019 cycle went out to Florida’s Blake Hinson (Deltona High School) in early July.

Hinson is a 6-foot-6, 240-pound prospect who has racked up an impressive offer list going into his third season of high school ball. Texas, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Florida State, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, and Georgia Tech are all vying for Hinson’s talents.

Interestingly, Hinson chose to sit out his sophomore season in football and focus on basketball instead. He has picked up several Power 5 basketball offers.
