I'm sick of the Shapen slander. He is a first year starter and sophomore QB. Great things don't happen immediately, and if any fan base should know that it's Baylor.

Ok fair enough but where is the improvement this year?

It shouldn't be pinned all on Shapen. The dude still helped us win a championship for us and won some games this year. He needs a possession big type receiver like a Mims. We have some quick receivers but we need a guy who can go up and get a football. Take Johnston away from TCU and see how good they are then. Those are the types of guys who move the chains on third down.

Don't get me wrong Shapen has a lot to improve on especially footwork and decision making. You can tell the game is moving too fast for him at times. He also needs to use this off-season to be the leader of this team. I do think we should look at all quarterbacks in the offseason. Also I question some of the play calling for Shapen.

I'm as disappointed as any about this season because we were hyped up and we didn't deliver.

Honestly I'm more sick about our defense and especially secondary. Those secondary breakdowns are ridiculous. I would have not thought our defense would fall off that much under Aranda and Roberts. I know we lost some key guys on defense but we still returned a lot.

Imagine how much more likable he'd be playing on a 10-1 team behind a senior?

Fans would be screaming for him to play after the hoss got the first down on 3rd and 3 instead of sliding. Why? Because a 28-26 win makes people want more.

The whole team needs to play better.

I don't like to speculate on intangible things, but I think Shapen's biggest problem may be something that you can't coach into him -- and that's competitive toughness.

Charlie Brewer and Gerry Bohanon would have never slid short of the chains on a pivotal third down or passed up an opportunity to try to make a play on that last drive. Blake has done that kind of stuff all year.

I'm afraid he just doesn't have that dog in him. And there's little you can do to put that in a guy that doesn't have it.

I miss having fans give credit for our many wins to everyone but our quarterback.

That was a lot more fun than having those same fans make excuses for their preferred quarterback while losses pile.

Everyone said Duggan lacked the inner dog and the ability to hit the broadside of a barn but he's now probably going to receive an invite to New York. So many people thought Josh Allen would flame out in the NFL and he's now competing for MVPs.

Shapen can learn and improve. Some of it is the harder mental aspect of the game but it can be done. Many of his mistakes are second guessing himself. Throwing a pass a half second late, mixing up when to slide and when not to, trying to place a ball as opposed to lettin it rip and then lettin it rip when placing would be better.

Pardon my French but everyone in life needs a certain percentage of "*****it" in their work. Shapen needs that. A sports psychologist combined with film study and throwing thousands of off season passes to receivers can help.

I remember people questioning Duggan's accuracy. I don't remember anyone questioning his competitiveness or heart.

Most Big 12 quarterbacks who have made significant improvement struggled earlier in their careers because they were too confident not be cause they weren't confident enough. I think that 'it' factor is something you either have or you don't.

You can develop enough skills around natural talent to reach a competent level and win some games. But guys like Chris Simms and Trevor Knight don't win championships because they don't have it in their guts to do so. I'm afraid Blake's that same way.

Look at yesterday's stats. Shapen and Duggan were dead even on qb rating

Methinks criticism of 18 to 22 year olds is weak

I try to limit my criticism to coaches and play calling. I certainly thought some of Grimes calls were bad. Same for Robert's who gets very little criticism.

When Duggan's team needed a field goal to win on the final drive, he broke a tackle and ran 12 yards to put them in field goal range.

When we needed a first down to extend a key drive before that, Blake slid three yards short of the chains -- on one of FOUR three-and-outs in the second half.

One is a winning quarterback. The other is not.

Shapen was up and down. He could be very good next year. My disappointment was when he struggled, they did not put Drones in. He is a much better passer than I thought and was very good on the run. In baseball, teams take out Cy Young pitchers for a reliever all the time.

Good afternoon Mrs. Shapen. Your son is in his third year at this program and this is big boy P5 football. He has not improved since last year. The university pays its coaching staff millions of dollars, and while this is all just a game, at some point the program will have to make a tough decision about its starting quarterback. I'm fully supportive of Blake, and I hope he comes out and throws five touchdowns against Texas, but so far I'm not seeing the tangibles or intangibles that would make me believe he'll ever be a great quarterback here at Baylor

No one with a brain thought Duggan sucked. He was a highly rated recruit and could always sling it, but he's been hurt. Like a lot. That slows someone's development. Shapen can't use that excuse. I also don't buy the excuse that he's young. I mean, dude is in his third year. At some point, what you see is what you get with a quarterback. Shapen's ceiling simply isn't as high as Duggans

If the goal is to only get to 6 wins and qualify for a bowl game Blake is the guy

Outside of the physical… his mental mistakes killed us this year.

Just in the TCU game… 1) Dive, don't slide. We get that first down and we all but ice the game. 2) Missing Sims bc he predetermined that he was gonna run it.

I'm not saying Shapen can't get better OR get better weapons, but 'as is' we're a 7-8 win team at max.

To me the QB HAS to be a leader, not just vocal, but also with his play. And Shapens play has diminished from last year's championship and bowl game to now.
Yea, some of it can be attributed to raw receiver corp, some suspect play calling, but to be a leader he should be elevating his play along with the others on offense.
It was said numerous times that in the game against KState, that the interception on the first drive seemed to take the life out of the team and the fans, you could feel it. And the 3rd down play where Shapen chose to run instead of hitting a wide open Sims believe he is not the kind of leader we need to compete for championships.
Now wether that QB is on the roster, coming thru the portal or the highly touted Novousad joining the team is the asnswer, I don't know.
But I sure as hell hope we find him for next year.
