It can kind of feel like the sky is falling when we hear about a few of our players entering the portal....but I guess big picture we've done a great job of retaining players.

great post/statistic.

It tells you they treat the players well.

in the long run, that will make for a great sales pitch.

If that is all time, that's impressive with the coaching changes we have had at OC and DC. I think the portal has only been the last 3 years?

Blessed be the name of the portal.

I feel like it'd be the same for basketball... testimony yes mostly to our coaches..but also Mack and his staff on the culture they've built.

How long has the current portal been around like 3 years? This is the first year post NIL. How have we done retaining players this season compared to pre NIL seasons?

Stidham

That's an awful lot of stars at the most important position transferring out!

I suspect you may have similar stats with many other teams. Outside of injuries the mindset has taken over that you don't play multiple QBs in a game. It is the only position outside of kickers where this is done. Only one a season can be happy if you came there to play.at that position.

Grant worked the multiple QBs pretty good. Amazing that others don't do it more. Of course, I guess that would give the ones platooning a mindset that they will never be truly #1. There are enough practices that receivers, linemen, and RBs ought to be able to handle a different guy taking the snap. And certainly to platoon QBs the "2nd" one needs to be clearly as good as the first one at least situationally, otherwise why platoon?.........other than to retain depth when you need it. With NIL and the portal it is only going to get worse until the large numbers of ones entering the portal that end up without a better place to play or in worse positions than they were already in gets through the heads of others thinking about it, and they are deterred from entering.

Interesting points - I wonder if some coaches may start to utilize that strategy - maybe even give defenses more stuff to have to handle each week.

What's the number of Baylor players in the portal right now? It has to be really low.

When you consider the company they are keeping on that list I'm not even sure what it says about Baylor.

Program culture still matters. And those that communicate clearly with their recruits and bring in kids who match their vision will retain more of those players than those who do not.

Unfortunately, I don't see them as a huge portal destination either after this season, but you never know

Pretty cool to see that.

Is there a list of the top ten that have had players transfer out?

Not sure what you mean by that. If it is a dig to say it is bad teams on there I don't get it.

Of the 10 teams on the list 8 are in bowl games.

3 were conference champs. One more played in their conf championship game

One is in a NY6 bowl game and been in the playoffs.

So to me it says good things about being able to keep your kids in this day of "if I don't start I will leave" even if the team is winning.

There's also the variable that some of these players were likely shown the exit door. Brewer and Bohanan are certainly in that category. I suspect that Drones basically was too.

Some of this is "good attrition."
BobbyBare
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Drones was not shown the door. Staff wanted him to stay. He was irritated he didn't get a chance to play when the starter (Shapen) was so horrid the entire season.

Drones got fed up and left. Staff tried to talk him out of it to no avail. Drones got picked up by another P5 program that had a down year but is a bigtime program and he will probably do well there.

This is a big loss for Baylor. The QB room at Baylor is now very thin and with Shapen as the starter the QB room is not only very thin with no backups, but also very very poor quality.

Only saving grace is Novasad but he is talking to the Purples and unsure what is going on there and why he is still talking to them on the sly. .

Be careful casting dispersion on Drones saying he was shown the door. You may think that sounds great by implying he's not good enough but the flip side of that is that it could also imply you have a coaching staff incapable of identifying talent that fits its strategy or can't develop highly recruited players.

Regarding Drones being shown the door.

I don't know what happened. I don't believe you do either, but I have had a job before, and I've hired and fired people. Does your boss tell you "you should go somewhere else"? Usually not, but s/he might say, something like "I see a lot of work left for you to do in the next year to achieve your goals . . . blah blah"

In this case, my suspicion is that they gave Drones a message consistently like this over the course of the season. In a hypothetical conversation that I am totally making up, I can imagine it going where Drones asked for more time,

and the coaches did NOT say "we think you should transfer,"

but they did probably say "We don't think you are ready. You have a lot of work to do. Do these things XYZ and we'll see."

Maybe they never came out and said "leave," but they never rewarded him. Perhaps they even said something like "You are talented, and we want you here, but you'll have to adjust to fit into our system." After a while every manager or coach knows what the person is thinking who is receiving these messages.

See where I'm going with this?

Muecke/Carlson Is the most memorable example, but going back to '74 Teaff sometimes put Mark Jackson in even when Jeffrey wasn't hurt. Made a great change of pace. Could have made a difference this year.

BobbyBare is a TCU troll....best to put on ignore.

I don't mind fans from other teams coming to the board....but not when they pretend to be BU fans.

First off you're a TCU fan that gets off by talking sh it to opposing fan bases.

Second, you don't know a damn thing about what's going on behind the scenes.

BTW Baylor in overall athletics is light years ahead of TCU. Mens and womens Basketball national champions and Big12 champs in both football and basketball. Academics is better too.

Stidham sat out a semester at McClennan JUCO before going to Auburn to be eligible. Besides no portal existed at that time.
