Mississippi State transfer QB Sawyer Robertson commits to Baylor

Mississippi State transfer QB Sawyer Robertson‍ committed to Baylor on Tuesday evening following his official visit over the weekend. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound prospect will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Robertson signed with Baylor over TCU. This quickly became a head-to-head battle between the Big 12 rivals for the priority quarterback. Ultimately, it was the Bears who came away with the blue-chip prospect.

As a three-year starter at Lubbock Coronado High School, Robertson threw for 12,256 yards and 146 touchdowns with just 23 interceptions while completing 64% of his passes. He also ran for 475 yards and 12 scores.

A four-star prospect, Robertson was a top 150 player in the nation for the 2021 class. He held offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Louisville, Florida State, TCU, Texas, USC, and Wisconsin, among others but chose to commit to playing both football and baseball at Mississippi State.

just based on the stars and the schools that recruited him.. he will be QB1. You did see what our QB1 this year, right?

He did say that he chose Mississippi state because of football AND baseball. Will he play for Baylor baseball, too? We could use some help there as well

Yes i did i see our QB 1 this season. I also saw his couple of starts and spring when he was named QB1 Problem is he should have been QB 3

This magnifies how terrible the decision to bench Bohannon and then not to play Drones was. We are in a situation of hoping and praying someone's backup will be our starter
Sawyer Robertson isn't just "someone's backup." He was the heir apparent behind a really good, experienced quarterback in Will Rogers, and likely would have started two years at Mississippi State had Mike Leach not died.

With the exception of Jarrett Stidham, who was an all-world recruit out of Stephenville, Robertson is our highest quarterback recruit since 2002. You're talking about a legitimate talent here.

I agree. And I was as skeptical as anyone.

Sawyer Robertson is better than any transfer quarterback I ever imagined us bringing in. I thought we'd end up with a couple of guys like Tristan Gebbia. If Gebbia ends up committing and being our third-stringer, we're in really damn good shape.

Good to see you have step off the ledge today. I'm pretty excited about his potential. Constistent passes and not baking our of the pocket should help the offense improve. WRs need to hit the weight room now

For real? It's funny, when I watch his highlights that's actually who he reminds me of. His release is a little slower but they have similar skill sets. One thing that stood out to me in the senior highlights posted above is that he seems to have very good instincts in knowing when to take off and run; he's an above average athlete from what I see

According to his Mississippi State bio, he is Stidham cousin.

What???? Still a little thin in numbers I believe. Bring on one more quality scholarship QB and then maybe we can have a discussion about being better positioned than last year.

Nobody and I mean nobody has more than 2 QB's on their roster who they think they can WIN with next year. Everybody else is a Prince Harry.

I agree with you. Eventually we'll move on. They smoked a whole season with that decision and if it wasn't a lock, you dance with the one that brung ya.

That said, we smoked the greatest offensive mind ever over rumors so baylor and it's leaders have a history of being eat up with the ruhtard

Handoff to the left, loss of 2 yards. Another handoff to the left, loss of 3 yards. Jk.

Didnt Max Duggan have an awful year last year in 2021? Maybe Shapen can be our Duggan in 2023 with the pressure from the QB room and bring us to a more palatable Natty game

Different offense from 2021 to 2022. Also Duggan still showed signs of leadership, moxie, and skill in 2021. Shapen could be better in 2023 if he wins the starting job we will see. I'm starting to think when there's a controlled environment and there is no game to lose, Shapen probably looks and plays like an all American in practice. Probably why he won the starting job over Bohanon

Another difference is Duggan had Garrett Riley
Shapen has Shawn Bell

Says he ran a "wind aided" 10.5 100 meter which is insanely fast no matter how you slice it

This is patently false. Winning programs typically have 3 or more QB's that they can win with in the current or next year. Take a look at some rosters.

Feels like the future is not having as many promising QBs in the room, unless you're a blue blood program that's worth waiting your turn for. The transfer portal means these guys can go whenever the grass looks greener.

No true talent is sitting patiently at a mid sized school waiting 2 or 3 years for their shot.

Reality is I think the best we can probably hope for is have two solid quarterbacks on campus who both compete to start, with maybe a third old-hand who understands he's only there in case of calamity.

In other words, this off-season QB anxiety might quickly start to become the norm. For instance, if Shapen loses the job this spring, you think he's gonna stick around?

I think the key will just be meticulously planning your QB room, having a timetable that works for everyone and then being able to pivot and adjust when someone leaves.

I think you want at any given time ...

A veteran starter/backup with one or two years of eligibility remaining
A starting caliber player with two or three years of eligibility remaining
A promising young freshman quarterback you can redshirt

If you plan your room that way and keep your three guys staggered, you can keep three quality bodies in your program at all times. But you'll need to strategically use the portal to keep your room in this state. It won't be the same three players for the entirety of their careers, most likely.

I'd like to see those teams and their rosters. I doubt there could be any proof that a 3rd team QB could take over and the team wouldn't take a big step back. Maybe there is a rare exception, but I'd be interested in your evidence/argument.

Staying negative, regardless of good news, wears me out.
